Prince George’s County, Maryland…District III Community Oriented Police Service (COPS) partnered with the Boy Scouts of America last evening to host “Movie Night”.
This event was held as a part of the summer initiative in efforts to deter crime and strengthen relationships with our communities. Movie Night was held in the 3000 block of Victory Lane in Suitland at the Windsor Crossing Community Center. Over 30 residents of various age groups were in attendance of the showing.
“This is the first community movie night of the summer with a second to be held in the Suitland area in mid July. This event provided an excellent way for our citizens to interact with police and share their concerns” said Cpl. Gholston of the District III COPS Unit.

PGPD District IV Hosts Community Walk on 23rd Parkway
Prince George’s County, Maryland… District IV Commander, Major James A. Harper and the District IV COPS office joined District 7 Councilwoman Karen R. Toles and other community leaders for a Community Walk with residents along 23rd Parkway in Temple Hills last night. The event was designed to maintain an open dialogue between the community and the police department by providing an opportunity for the District IV Command Staff to address the community’s concerns about crime and neighborhood safety.
District IV Commanders and COPS officers shared information with over 75 residents throughout twelve blocks of the 23rd Parkway corridor sharing information about the “Summer Crime Initiative” as well as educating the community on crime prevention and preventative safety tips.
“Our goal of community engagement is working. We continue to see progress as more members of our communities continue to join our walks,” said Major James Harper.

PGPD to Assist in Mock Vehicle Crash for upcoming “Smooth Operator” Program
Prince George's County, Maryland… In anticipation for the upcoming regional “Smooth Operator” Program, the Maryland State Highway Administration and the Prince George’s County Police Department will be conducting a live demonstration of a single vehicle rollover crash at Parkdale High School. The purpose of the event is to educate the public on the dangers of speeding behind the wheel by providing a vivid example of the damages and results that may be caused by aggressive driving.
The “Smooth Operator” Program was founded in 1997 with 18 law enforcement agencies, public safety officials, and other experts across the greater Washington, DC region to coordinate efforts to reduce aggressive driving. The program efforts have resulted in over 3.6 million citations being issued to aggressive drivers since its inception.

Fallen Hero (06/27/08) Sergeant Richard S. Findley
Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Sergeant Richard S. Findley, lost this day in 2008 while attempting to apprehend theft suspects in Charlie Sector.
Sgt. Findley was born on June 5, 1969. He was raised in Beltsville, Maryland, and graduated from High Point High School in 1987. Sgt. Findley joined the Prince George's County Police Department on July 27, 1998 as a member of Session 92. Upon completion of his Academy training in February, 1999, Sgt. Findley was assigned to the Beltsville District Station. He initially served as a patrol officer and later became a member of the Special Assignment Team.
On the morning of June 27, 2008, Sgt. Findley was conducting surveillance on an unoccupied vehicle that was displaying stolen registration plates in the parking lot of the Laurel Pines Apartment Complex in the 14800 Block of Bowie Rd. Laurel, Maryland. At approximately 1145 hours, the vehicle became occupied by two subjects. Sgt. Findley approached the vehicle to attempt the apprehension. The vehicle accelerated and intentionally struck the Sergeant as he exited his police vehicle. Sgt. Findley was dragged by the suspect vehicle and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Laurel Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Sgt. Findley served the Prince George's County Police Department for ten years and was the 25th member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice. He was the 46th law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.
At the time of his death, Sergeant Richard S. Findley was 39 years old and survived by his wife and two daughters.

Harper and the District IV COPS office joined community leaders for the Middleton Lane Neighborhood Watch Community in Camp Springs. The event was designed to maintain an open dialogue between the community and the police department by providing an opportunity for the District IV Command Staff to address the community’s concerns about crime and neighborhood safety.
The walk consisted of eight streets along the Middleton Lane Corridor. District IV COPS officers shared information with residents in the neighborhood about the “Summer Crime Initiative” as well as information educating the community on crime prevention and safety tips.
“What made this event a success was the collaborative effort between our police department and the community. This is crime fighting through community engagement,” said Major James Harper.
District IV to Kick Off Glassmanor Reading Recovery Program
Prince George’s County, Maryland…Prince George’s County Police Department’s District IV Station officers met with community members yesterday to discuss the upcoming Glassmanor Reading Recovery Program scheduled to begin next week. During the meeting community members volunteered their time and services to assist with the program. The program will target 30 first and second graders from Glassmanor Elementary School and is designed to strengthen reading and phonics skills before the 2011-2012 school year.

PGPD to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint for 4th of July Weekend
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Operations Division will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the central portion of the County on Friday, July 1, 2011 from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. as part of a safe 4th of July holiday weekend.
An increased amount of motorists and pedestrians will be traveling throughout the County for the holiday weekend and we want to make sure they arrive safely to their destinations. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-related crashes, sobriety checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.
Each year drunk driving is a major cause of injury and fatal collisions. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and encourage all drivers to designate a sober driver if they choose to drink.

Police Investigate Homicide on Hastings Drive
The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the homicide of Henri Dominic Pratt, 26, in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
On June 26, 2011 at approximately 1:49 a.m., Patrol officers responded to the 7100 block of Hastings Drive for a report of a cutting. Upon arrival, patrol officers found Pratt, of the 8500 block of Sumter Lane in Clinton, suffering from trauma to his body. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A 24 year-old male victim, also injured, was transported to a local hospital to be treated. He is expected to survive.
Detectives are working to identify the suspect(s) and establish a motive in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Identity of Suspects Sought in Commercial Armed Robbery - Surveillance Pictures Released
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Robbery Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying individuals wanted in connection with the armed robbery of the Maxey Liquor Store in Temple Hills, Maryland.
On June 6, 2011 at approximately 7:35 p.m., two suspects walked into the store located in the 7500 block of Allentown Road. Once inside, the suspects approached the store employees behind the counter, displayed a handgun, and demanded money from the register and a safe. The suspects fled the store in an unknown direction with money and property. An area canvass was conducted by officers with negative results.
The first suspect is described as a black male, between 20-25 years of age, approximately 5’0” tall, weighing between 140-160 pounds. He was last seen wearing all black clothing, with a black skull cap and a black handgun. The second suspect is described as a black male, between 20-30 years of age, approximately 6’1” tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, an orange shirt, and blue jeans.

PGPD Announces Arrest in Armed Bank Robbery in District Heights
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Robbery Unit has arrested 39 year-old Jalmalda Durrell Redish in connection with an armed bank robbery in District Heights, Maryland.
Redish was developed as a suspect in the robbery of a Wachovia Bank and a warrant was obtained for his arrest. On June 17, 2011 Redish, of the 6500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in District Heights, was arrested and is being charged with armed robbery. He has been remanded to the Department of Corrections.
On June 13, 2011 at approximately 4:05 p.m., patrol officers responded to the Wachovia Bank, located in the 5800 block of Silver Hill Road, for a call of a robbery. When patrol officers arrived, they discovered that a suspect had entered the bank, implied a handgun, and demanded money. The tellers, fearing for their safety, complied with the suspect, who then took the money and fled the bank on foot. Patrol officers conducted a canvass of the area for the suspect which was unsuccessful.

Police Make Arrests in Homicide Investigation on Bald Eagle Road
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested Andre Sanders, 40, and Christopher Damon Sanders, 24, in connection with the homicide investigation of Anton DeMichael Agurs, 43, occurring last week in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Homicide Detectives identified Andre Sanders of the 600 block of Audrey Lane in Oxon Hill and Christopher Sanders of the 1100 block of Allison Street NW in Washington, DC as suspects in this case and obtained warrants for their arrests. Andre and Christopher Sanders were arrested on unrelated charges by the Metropolitan Police Department. Both individuals were extradited back to Prince George’s County early yesterday on 1st degree murder warrants and have been remanded to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a no bond status.
On June 7, 2011 at approximately 11:28 p.m., patrol officers responded to Bald Eagle Road and Oxon Hill Farm Road for a report to check on the welfare of an unconscious person lying in the roadway. PGPD to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint in Riverdale
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Operations Division will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint along the Riverdale Road corridor this Friday, June 17th 2011, from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. in Riverdale, Maryland.
As motorists and pedestrians celebrate the start of the summer season, the focus will be making sure they arrive to and from their destinations safely. Each year drunk driving is a major cause of injury and fatal collisions and we want to encourage those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol to designate a sober driver if they choose to drink.

PGPD District I Hosts "Take Back the Park" Barbeque
Prince George’s County, Maryland…District I Commander, Major Hector Velez, and the District I COPS Office, joined the Templeton Knolls Civic Association Saturday June 11th for the “Take Back the Park” barbeque at the Templeton Knolls Neighborhood Park. The “Take Back the Park” barbeque was designed to maintain open dialogue between the community and the police department, and was an opportunity for District I Command Staff to discuss the community’s concerns around crime and neighborhood safety.
More than 70 residents of the Templeton Knolls community turned out and were joined by Maryland State Senator Paul G. Pinsky and Council Member Eric Olsen. District I COPS officers shared information with residents about the “Summer Crime Initiative” as well as handing out information and educating the community on crime prevention and safety tips.
District I COPS officers have held a series of events in the area to support community relations including an “Observational Skills and Crime Reporting” class, conducted in both Spanish and English, in the Langley Park and Templeton Knolls communities; and the Police Athletic League held a “Soccer Fest” for participants from Bladensburg and Langley Park Elementary Schools.
“District I is a diverse community with rich cultural ties”, said Major Velez. “These community events are an excellent way to help bring everyone together and foster a sense of public safety between the residents and the Police Department. Police Seek Information in Fatal Hit-and-Run Collision in Riverdale
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CARU) is investigating a fatal collision that occurred in Riverdale, Maryland earlier this morning.
At approximately 4:56 a.m., Patrol Officers responded to the intersection of Riverdale Road and 63rd Place for a call of a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and an unknown vehicle. Upon arrival, Patrol Officers found Delavan Lamont Beam, 31, suffering from trauma consistent with a vehicle collision. Prince George’s County Fire and EMS personnel transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Preliminary investigation revealed Beam, of the 2200 block of Prince of Wales Court in Bowie, was traveling on a motorcycle in the westbound lane of Riverdale Road approaching 63rd Place. The unknown vehicle, which was traveling southbound on 63rd Place, attempted to make a left turn without yielding the right of way to Beam. The unknown vehicle struck Beam and fled the scene without stopping and rendering assistance. The unknown vehicle is described as a Lincoln Navigator with damage to its left rear and may be missing the tail assembly in that area.
CARU investigators are seeking information regarding the striking vehicle or information from anyone who may have witnessed or been in the area at the time of the collision.

PGPD Announces Arrest in Homicide in Capitol Heights
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested 26 year-old Steven Donnell Waytes in connection with the murder of 34 year-old Jimmie Lee Hunter in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Waytes was developed as a suspect in the murder of Jimmie Lee Hunter and a warrant was obtained for his arrest on June 7, 2011. Waytes, of the 4200 block of Barnaby Road S.E. in Washington, D.C. was arrested without incident. He is being charged with 1st Degree Murder and is awaiting extradition from Washington, D.C.
On May 27, 2011 at approximately 7:25 p.m., Patrol Officers responded to the 1700 block of Kenilworth Avenue for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, Patrol Officers found Hunter, of the 3700 block of Gull Road in Temple Hills, Maryland, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Blanchard was developed as a suspect in the murder of Alusine Kargbo and a warrant was obtained for his arrest on June 3, 2011. On June 9, 2011 at approximately 4:40 p.m. Blanchard, of the 1800 block of Village Green Drive in Landover, turned himself into authorities. He is being charged with 2nd Degree Murder and has been remanded to the Department of Corrections on a no bond status.

Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics a Success
Prince George’s County, Maryland… Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Mark A. Magaw and Hyattsville City Police Chief Douglas K. Holland participated in the opening ceremonies for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run -“Flame of Hope” for Special Olympics on Wednesday morning at the Hyattsville Justice Center .
Over 100 runners representing the Prince George's County Police Department, Hyattsville City Police Department, Laurel Police Department, and other local and federal agencies joined the athletes as they carried the “Flame of Hope” north on Route 1 through College Park to the American Legion. From there, the “Flame of Hope” will be passed to a Special Olympics athlete who will light the Olympic cauldron to officially open the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games at Towson University.
Today marked the 26th Anniversary of the Maryland Torch Run. A movement that began in 1986 continues to be a huge success by raising significant funds for the Special Olympics. “The Torch Run inspires and uplifts everyone that it touches and it’s wonderful that we get to be a part of it each year,” said Chief Mark Magaw.

Julie Parker Named Director of Public Affairs Division for Prince George’s County Police Department
Prince George’s County Maryland…Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Mark A. Magaw is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Julie Parker as Director of the Public Affairs Division for the Prince George’s County Police Department. On June 27, 2011, Mrs. Parker will officially begin serving as Director and will oversee the Department’s internal and external communications, including relations with news media, community relations, and other communications support.
Mrs. Parker is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park and joins the Department following a thirteen year career with News Channel 8 and WJLA ABC 7, where she earned a reputation as a tenacious general assignment reporter and anchor covering news affecting Prince George’s, Montgomery, Frederick, and Washington Counties. In recognition for her work, she has received a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, an Associated Press Award, and an Emmy.

Police Make Arrests in Double Homicide Investigation on Rollins Avenue
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested Kenan Arnon Seif Myers, 24, and Brian Cuffie Mayhew, 19, in connection with the double homicide investigation of Anthony Stevens McKelvin, 28 and Sean O’Neil Ellis, 24, that occurred last week in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
On May 30, 2011 at approximately 11:34 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 1300 block of Rollins Avenue for a report of sounds of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found McKelvin, of the 4200 block of Suitland Road , Suitland , Maryland , and Ellis, of the 1900 block of Colette Terrace, District Heights , Maryland , inside of a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene.
Homicide Detectives identified Kenan Meyers of the 5400 block of Addison Road in Fairmont Heights and Brian Mayhew of the 2400 block of Corning Avenue in Fort Washington as suspects in this case. Both were arrested earlier today on 1st degree murder warrants and have been remanded to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a no bond status.

PGPD District IV Hosts Community Walk in Oxon Hill

Harper and the District IV COPS Office joined community leaders for a “Community Walk” Friday evening in the Glassmanor neighborhood of Oxon Hill. The “Community Walk” was designed to maintain open dialogue between the community and the police department, and was an opportunity for District IV Command Staff to discuss the community’s concerns around crime and neighborhood safety.

The Prince George’s County Police Department Celebrates 2nd Successful Youth Empowerment Year
PALMER PARK , MARYLAND – The Prince George’s County Police Department has partnered with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., to mentor and train teenage males in life skills. The EMBODI program (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) is designed to reach youth between the ages of 11 and 18, and has provided the Department with an excellent opportunity to interact positively with teenaged male youth.
The EMBODI program is one of three police department youth programs geared towards supporting teenaged youth. It is the only one that partners with a non-profit agency to reach African American and other Ethnic groups to build self esteem and chart good decision making processes.
Parents of middle and high school African American and other ethnic groups should call the Bureau of Patrol, 301-772-4750, to register their youth for the 2011-2012 EMBODI year. The EMBODI year runs concurrent with the school year, meets for two hours on the second Saturday and is supported by Prince George’s County Police Officers.

Police Make Arrest in Homicide of Missing Woman and Child

Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested Richmond Diallo Binns Phillips in connection with the murder of Wynetta Wright, who was reported missing earlier this week and was last seen in Temple Hills, Maryland.
Wynetta Wright, 20, was found lying in Oxon Run Stream Valley Park in the 2300 block of Oxon Run Drive suffering from trauma to the body. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Wynetta Wrights one year-old daughter, Jaylin Wright, was found abandoned in a vehicle in the 2400 block of Southern Avenue. She was also pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives developed Phillips as a suspect. Phillips was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder and is being held on a no bond status.

Police Seek Assistance in Locating Critical Missing Female (Wynetta Wright)
Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department is working with the Baltimore County Police Department in efforts to locate a critical missing female identified as 20-year-old Wynetta Wright. She was last seen on Monday, May 30, 2011, in the 3300 block of Curtis Drive, Temple Hills and has not been seen or heard from since.
Wright is being described a black female, light complexion, approximately 5’3” tall, 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair styled in four thick braids. She was last seen wearing a white swimsuit with red and purple flowers with shorts attached. Wright was also wearing a black tank top over her swimsuit and silver flip flop shoes. She may be driving a 2006 green Saturn Vue with Maryland registration of 58884M3. Wright should be traveling with her one year old daughter Jaylin Wright.

Prince George’s County Police Department Holds Promotional Ceremony
Prince George’s County, Maryland…Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Mark A. Magaw and County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III proudly recognized and congratulated newly promoted officers and civilians within the police department.
The promotion ceremony was held on Tuesday, May the 31st at Charles H. Flowers High School . Those promoted included 1 Major, 6 Captains, 15 Lieutenants, 33 Sergeants, 71 Corporals, 79 Police Officer First Class and 11 civilians.
“It’s an honor to be here to congratulate each one of you. Your daily efforts are an integral part of protecting Prince George ’s County. It is your service and dedication that gets the job done”, said Interim Chief Magaw.
