Suspect in Domestic-Related Murder in Custody

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit charged a man with murdering his girlfriend inside of their home on Thursday. The suspect is 43-year-old Keith Maybin, Jr. He’s charged with fatally shooting 43-year-old Courtney Blacksher.

 

On September 28, 2023, at approximately 4:05 pm, officers responded to an apartment in the 200 block of Harry S Truman Drive in the unincorporated section of Upper Marlboro. The victim was located suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.  

 

At approximately 7:10 pm, the suspect was taken into custody by Seat Pleasant Police officers. Maybin had just threatened two unrelated victims with a gun in the 8600 block of Central Avenue. Those victims were not injured.

 

The suspect is charged with first and second degree murder, assault and related charges. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

“Pigeon Drop” Scam Suspect Taken Into Custody in Florida

A suspect facing charges in connection with two “pigeon drop” scam investigations in Prince George’s County is now in custody. The suspect is 50-year-old William Coleman of Orange Park, FL. With the assistance of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, Coleman was located and arrested on Tuesday in Orlando, FL. 

A pigeon drop scam involves convincing a victim to give the suspect(s) a large amount of cash as collateral with the hope of then sharing a larger sum of money. There have been nine pigeon drop scams reported in the county in 2023.

Coleman is charged in connection with two cases. In one case, he and his accomplice(s) successfully stole thousands of dollars from their victim. In the second case, the victim ultimately did not lose any money. In both incidents, the victims are females and senior citizens. The successful scam occurred on June 8, 2023, in the 6300 block of Marlboro Pike in District Heights. The attempted theft occurred on June 1, 2023, in the 12000 block of Central Avenue in Mitchellville.

Following an extensive investigation into these two incidents, PGPD detectives identified Coleman as a suspect. At the time of his arrest on Tuesday, and through subsequent search warrants, PGPD Financial Crimes detectives recovered multiple pieces of evidence indicative of these scams to include more than $100,000 in counterfeit cash at his Florida home. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office (FL) assisted with the search of his home in Orange Park.

Pigeon drop scammers often carry notes or fake letters from non-existent law firms confirming the receipt of a large amount of money from either a settlement or inheritance. A letter of this nature was recovered inside of Coleman’s car.  

Also recovered, newspaper wrapped in a bandana. In many pigeon drop scams, scammers use bandanas to wrap the money a victim withdraws from his or her bank. Scammers then swap out the money for bundled newspaper unbeknownst to the victims.

“These crimes target some of the most vulnerable in our community. I want residents in Prince George’s County to know our detectives work relentlessly to identify and arrest suspects in these scams. Regarding Coleman, we do not believe he acted alone and that he worked with accomplices. Detectives are looking into whether he is linked to similar crimes along the East Coast. We sincerely thank our law enforcement partners in Florida for assisting us with this significant arrest,” said Chief Malik Aziz, Prince George’s County Police Department.

The team worked seamlessly to execute a warrant, demonstrating exceptional teamwork. Such crimes occur all too frequently and are predatory in nature, making this arrest a significant success. Thanks to the arrest, law enforcement has prevented further losses to potential victims and put another scammer behind bars. Through the collective efforts of law enforcement, we have effectively put an end to this scammer's ability to target innocent people, whether in Clay County or elsewhere,” said Sheriff Michelle Cook, Clay County Sheriff’s Office (FL).

Coleman remains in custody in Florida pending extradition to Prince George’s County.

PGPD Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Collision

UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as 61-year-old Andre Taliaferro of Greenbelt.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian that occurred Tuesday evening in Greenbelt. The deceased pedestrian’s name will be released once his identity is confirmed and his family is notified.  

On September 26, 2023, at approximately 7:45 pm, officers responded to the area of Kenilworth Avenue and Greenbelt Road. 

The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a sedan was traveling northbound on Kenilworth Avenue, when for reasons under investigation, struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene. The striking driver remained on the scene.   

The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates fatal crashes that occur in the city of Greenbelt.  

As with all fatal collisions, once complete with its investigation, CARU will refer the case to the State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of any criminal charges.

Detectives Identify and Arrest Suspect in Forestville Fatal Shooting

The Homicide Unit arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting in Forestville in August. The suspect is 34-year-old Devonte Taylor of District Heights. He is charged with the murder of 37-year-old Tyrone Thomas of District Heights. 

 

On August 13, 2023, at approximately 1:35 am, officers responded to the 3700 block of Donnell Drive for the report of a shooting. Thomas was located outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. Two additional adult males were also shot. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

 

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation. The suspect and victims were known to each other. 

 

Taylor is charged with first and second degree murder, attempted first and second degree murder and related charges. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Gun Recovered at Fairmont Heights High School

 

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating after a student at Fairmont Heights High School in Landover brought a loaded gun onto school property. The 17-year-old junior will be charged as an adult.

 

This morning, shortly before 11:00 am, the assigned School Resource Officer was notified that Prince George’s Schools security personnel recovered the gun from the student. The preliminary investigation revealed a witness notified administrators the suspect may possess illegal drugs. During a search of the student, the gun and drugs were recovered. The weapon had an attached machine conversion device. 

 

The student will be charged with handgun on person, dangerous weapon on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, loaded handgun on person, machine gun – aggressive purpose, rapid fire trigger activator violation as well as possession of a controlled substance.

Charles Ira Ross

The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in finding a missing man. He is identified as 65-year-old Charles Ira Ross. He was last seen in the 15700 block of Bradford Drive in Laurel on September 19, 2023.

Mr. Ross is a black male, 5’9” and 185 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black and white shirt and grey pants.

Detectives Investigate Homicide in Town of Capitol Heights

 The Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances of a homicide in the town of Capitol Heights on Friday night. The victim is 52-year-old Michael Fernando Davis of Capitol Heights. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.   

On September 15, 2023, at approximately 8:30 pm, officers with the Capitol Heights Police Department responded to the 5700 block of Gladstone Way. The victim was located in the roadway suffering from trauma. He died a short time later at a hospital. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine his cause of death.

The preliminary investigation suggests Davis suffered fatal injuries during the theft of his car. The suspect(s) crashed the car a short time after stealing it and fled the scene on foot.

The PGPD investigates all homicides in the town of Capitol Heights.

PGPD Homicide Unit Arrests Juvenile for Murder of DuVal High School Student

 The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit arrested a 17-year-old male from Glenarden for the murder of a DuVal High School student earlier this week in Lanham. The suspect is charged as an adult for fatally shooting 16-year-old Jayda Medrano-Moore of Greenbelt.

 

On September 11, 2023, at approximately 3:45 pm, officers responded to calls for a shooting in the 9800 block of Palamar Drive. The victim was located outside suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased a short time later at a hospital.

 

Through various investigative techniques, as well as information provided anonymously to Prince George’s County Crime Solvers, Homicide Unit detectives identified and arrested the juvenile suspect Thursday evening. The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking on Palamar Drive after leaving school when a fight ensued between two groups who were involved in an on-going dispute. During the fight, the suspect produced a gun. Detectives believe the victim attempted to intervene when she was shot.

 

The juvenile suspect is charged with first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault and a firearms charge. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

Shooting Victim Dies of Injuries; PGPD Homicide Unit Assumes Investigation

The Prince George’s County Police Homicide Unit is leading an investigation into a shooting that occurred earlier this month in Suitland. The victim, who has now died of his injuries, is 48-year-old Brian Akinfe of Temple Hills. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

 

On September 2, 2023, at approximately 7:40 pm, patrol officers responded to Branch Avenue and St Barnabas Road for the report of a crash involving a motorcycle. Officers located the victim in the roadway unresponsive near his motorcycle. While administering aid, first responders observed the victim was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries on September 12, 2023.
