Prince George’s County, Maryland… With the new school year set to begin on Monday, August 22, 2011, teachers and students are not the only people preparing. School resource officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department will enter Prince George’s County public high schools and middle schools to provide a positive law enforcement influence that will concentrate on the safety and security of our students, our schools, and our communities.
The School Resource Officer program is a nationally accepted program that places law enforcement officers within local schools. The program was designed to develop partnerships between law enforcement and the school community. “As first responders to any incident in the school system and as the agency responsible for investigating any serious events on school grounds, officers from within the police department are a natural fit to serve as SROs. They will work closely with principals, security personnel and faculty on a daily basis to set the foundation for a successful police/school partnership,” said Mark A. Magaw, Chief of Police.
