Police Conduct Investigation into Drowning Incident on Crain Highway

Prince George’s County Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is conducting an investigation into the drowning death of Kevin Sehinde Akinfeleye, 22, of the 5600 block of Whitfield Chapel Road in Lanham, Maryland. Akinfeleye was pronounced dead early yesterday morning after drowning in a swimming pool while attending a large house party in Upper Marlboro.

On July 31, 2011, at approximately 1:37 a.m., Prince George’s County patrol officers and Fire/EMS personnel responded to a report of a possible drowning at a house party along the 4200 block of Crain Highway. Authorities cleared the scene shortly thereafter. After receiving an additional call for service, authorities responded to the scene and located the decedent unresponsive in the pool. Akinfeleye was transported to Southern Maryland Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Prince George’s County Police Department has learned that several officers from the agency were working secondary employment at the party. The Chief of Police immediately ordered an internal investigation into the actions of those officers involved.  A preliminary review indicates no relationship between the actions of the responding police and fire personnel and the drowning. The initial call for service was received approximately 20 minutes after the decedent was last seen in the pool.
