Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union (PGCFCU) will hold its first back to school car seat check-up this Friday. The event is free and open to the public.
According to the NHTSA, while the installation and use of car seats may appear to be easy, 75%, or 3 out of 4 Maryland parents or caretakers use child vehicle restraints improperly. “Since we know that most of us don’t know the best practice for using car seats and boosters to get optimum protection for our children, we thought we’d start performing car seats check-ups as a way to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities associated with them in vehicle accidents. This is also an excellent opportunity to educate our parents on the proper purchase and installation of car seats,” said Deputy Chief, Bureau of Patrol, Colonel Kevin Davis.
Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to check for recalls, ensure car seats and boosters are installed correctly, and to check that the harness and vehicle installations are correct for the child. The car seat check-up takes about 30 minutes and involves drivers, parents and caretakers. All car seats must be installed before arriving at the car seat check-up site. Owner’s manuals for the safety seats and vehicle, if available, should be presented to the car seat technicians. The PGCFCU will replace the first 6 – 10 car seats that have been recalled or are unsafe.
