The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the accidental self-inflicted shooting of a 2-year-old boy, yesterday evening in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
On September 19, 2011, at approximately 7:51 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 6200 block of Oxon Hill Road for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, patrol officers discovered the toddler suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigation revealed the mother of the child was in a separate room from the toddler when she heard the sound of a gunshot. The mother went to the room where she found the toddler suffering from a gunshot wound.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The case will be sent to the State’s Attorney’s Office to be reviewed for any pending charges.
Individuals who own guns in their homes are reminded to unload, lock, and secure it in an undisclosed location from children. Ammunition should also be secured in a location separate from the gun.
