The Prince George’s County Police Department is working to identify the suspects shown in the above surveillance photographs. On February 29, 2012, at approximately 3:28 a.m., the suspects committed a robbery at the 7-Eleven located at 5401 Silver Hill Road, District Heights, Maryland.

Statement on Council Member Traffic Stop

     On February 22, 2012 at approximately noon, the Prince George's County Police Department issued a Maryland Uniform Complaint and Citation for an unsafe lane change (21-309b / $90) and a written warning for excessive speed to Prince George's County Council Member Karen Toles for violations observed by a uniformed patrol officer operating a marked police cruiser on the Capital Beltway near Branch Avenue.


     The issuance of a warning citation for the speed is consistent with the typical discretion applied by police officers to speeding motorists. The traffic violations were captured on the police officer's in-car camera, and the incident will be subject to command review. At the moment, the video is evidence in a pending District Court traffic case, and will not be released.

PGPD Remembers Sergeant John L. Bagileo (2/28/1994)

         Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Sergeant John L. Bagileo, lost this day in 1994 while responding to a tampering call in George Sector.

        Sgt. Bagileo was born on August 21, 1967, in Washington, D.C.  He was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland.  Sgt. Bagileo joined the Prince George's County Police Department on April 23, 1990 as a member of Session #74.  He graduated from the Academy on October 5, 1990 and was assigned to the District III Station.

        On the evening of February 28, 1994 at approximately 2200 hrs., Sgt. Bagileo was dispatched to a tampering in progress in the 4700 Blk. Mann St. Seat Pleasant, Maryland.  As Sgt. Bagileo proceeded to the scene, a civilian vehicle pulled out from a side street into the path of the police vehicle in the 6800 Blk. Martin Luther King Jr. Hwy., Seat Pleasant, Maryland.  Sgt. Bagileo executed an evasive maneuver, successfully avoiding a collision with the civilian vehicle.  In doing so, he lost control of the police vehicle and struck a utility pole.  The Sergeant suffered fatal injuries as a result of the single vehicle collision.

        Sgt. Bagileo served the Prince George's County Police Department for four years and was the 20th member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.  He was the 31st law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.

        At the time of his death, Sergeant John L. Bagileo was 26 years old and survived by his wife and daughter.

Suspect Sought in Multiple Bank Robberies

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Robbery Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying an individual wanted in connection with multiple bank robberies.

The most recent robbery occurred this morning when the suspect walked into the M&T Bank located in the 6300 block of Kirby Road, Clinton, and passed a note to the teller demanding money. The victim complied and the suspect took an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police believe this same suspect is also responsible for three additional bank robberies to include the Capitol One Bank located in the 1000 block of Largo Center Drive, Largo, on February 9, 2012; the SunTrust Bank located in the 5700 block of South East Crain Highway, Upper Marlboro, on January 10, 2012; and the Wells Fargo Bank located in the 5800 block of Silver Hill Road, District Heights, on December 29, 2011. In each robbery, the suspect passed a note demanding money from the register. The suspect took cash and fled the scene on foot.

The suspect is described as a black male between the ages of 25 - 40 years old. He is approximately 5’9” - 6’0” in height and weighs about 150 - 200 lbs.

PGPD Remembers Fallen Officer Carroll D. Garrison (2/20/1973)

Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Officer Carroll D. Garrison, lost this day in 1973 while investigating a reported breaking & entering in Adam Sector.

Ofc. Garrison was born on April 16, 1941.  He was raised in Hyattsville, Maryland.  Upon completing high school, Ofc. Garrison joined the United States Navy where he served with honor and distinction for nine years.  In 1968, Ofc. Garrison joined the Prince George's County Police Department, following in the footsteps of his father, Sergeant Carroll V. Garrison.  The elder Garrison had recently retired from the Department after being wounded during a bank robbery in Henry Sector.  The junior Garrison, upon graduating from the Academy, was assigned to the Hyattsville Station.

  At approximately 2010 hours on the evening of February 20, 1973, Ofc. Garrison responded to a complaint of a breaking & entering in progress at 6519 Medwick Drive, Hyattsville, Maryland.  A neighbor had called police after seeing flashlight movement inside of the residence.  Ofc. Garrison was the first officer on scene and discovered a broken window to the rear of the residence.  As Ofc. Garrison approached the window to investigate further, the homeowner, believing the officer to be an intruder, discharged a shotgun from within the residence striking the officer in the chest.  Ofc. Garrison was rushed to Washington Adventist Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.


Ofc. Garrison served the Prince George's County Police Department for five years and was the eighth member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.  He was the 11th law enforcement officer to give his life while serving this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.

 At the time of his death, Officer Carroll D. Garrison was 31 years old and survived by his wife.

PGPD Remembers Sgt. Joseph K. Brown (2/19/1966)

   Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Sergeant Joseph K. Brown, Sr., lost this day in 1966 while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in Adam Sector.

       Sgt. Brown was born on December 2, 1929, in Takoma Park, Maryland.  He was raised on his family's farm in what is now the 6800 Block of New Hampshire Avenue.  Sgt. Brown attended Mount Rainier High School and the University of Maryland before joining the United States Marine Corps.  He served with honor and distinction, achieving the rank of sergeant while assigned to Camp Pendleton.  Sgt. Brown briefly joined the Takoma Park Police Department at the beginning of 1958.  On March 16, 1958, Sgt. Brown joined the Prince George's County Police Department, following in the footsteps of his father, Ralph W. Brown.  The elder Brown was among the original members of this Agency when it was formed in 1931.  The elder Brown was promoted through the ranks and eventually attained the rank of Chief in 1943, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1950.  His son, Sgt. Brown, was assigned to the Hyattsville Station and promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1965.

       On February 19. 1966, Sgt. Brown and two of his fellow officers responded to 2211 University Boulevard, Hyattsville, Maryland to serve an arrest warrant for indecent exposure.  As the officers attempted to initiate contact with the wanted subject, his 17 year old son suddenly exited the apartment and engaged the officers in a physical confrontation.  As the officers attempted to place the youth into custody, the wanted subject exited the apartment and opened fire with a handgun, striking Sgt. Brown in the chest and wounding another officer.  Sgt. Brown was transported to Washington Sanitarium Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

       Sgt. Brown served the Prince George's County Police Department for eight years and was the fourth member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.  He was the fifth law enforcement officer to give his life while serving this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.

       At the time of his death, Sergeant Joseph K. Brown, Jr. was 36 years old and survived by his wife and son.

PGPD Officers Aid Citizens During Apartment Fire in Forestville

Prince George's County police officers assisted residents trapped inside their homes during a dangerous fire early this morning in the 6100 block of Hil Mar Drive.  Officer Peter Johnson arrived on scene and was approached by the homeowner.  Frightened for the safety of her children, the homeowner advised Officer Johnson that her children were trapped on the second floor.  Johnson, who is also a volunteer firefighter, quickly informed the responding firefighters and began to assist rescuing the trapped children.

At the height of the fire, Officer Ryan Watson, and Officer Darryl Wormuth began to evacuate the residents from the increasingly dangerous blaze.  Watson and Wormuth rescued a 90 year-old man who was in a wheel chair.  While trapped on the second floor of his home, the officers were able to carry the man down the stairs and out of his smoke-filled house.

The Prince George's County Police Department commends these brave officers and firefighters on their heroic actions that helped save lives.

Prince George’s County Police Conducts Fifth Car Seat Check-up

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department, in partnership with the Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union, will conduct its fifth car seat check-up on Friday, February 17, 2012, at the Office of Central Services.  The car seat check-up, a component of the community outreach and vehicle traffic safety program, is free and open to the public.

Certified car seat technicians will be on hand to check for recalls, ensure that child passenger car seats and boosters are installed correctly, and that the harness and vehicle installation are correct for the child.  The service is free, takes about 30 minutes and involves drivers, parents and caretakers in the check-up.  The Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union will replace the first six car seats that have been recalled or are unsafe.  All car seats must be installed upon arrival at the car seat check-up site.  Appointments are not necessary.

Fallen Hero- Officer William W. Gullett, Jr. (02/16/69)

Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Officer William W. Gullett, Jr., lost this day in 1969 while investigating a loud music complaint in George Sector.

   Ofc. Gullett was born on December 9, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri.  He was raised in College Park, Maryland and attended Northwestern High School.  After serving briefly in the cadet program, Ofc. Gullett joined the Prince George's County Police Department on November 6, 1967, as a member of Session 3-67, a class that would ultimately suffer the loss of three of its members in the Line of Duty.  Upon completion of his Academy training, Ofc. Gullett was assigned to the Seat Pleasant Station.

 On February 16, 1969, at approximately 0100 hours, Ofc. Gullett responded to a loud music complaint at 2910 Markham Lane in Kentland, Maryland.  Ofc. Gullett and a second officer approached the target apartment and made contact with the resident.  While discussing the matter with him, the resident suddenly drew a handgun from his waistband and opened fire, fatally wounding Ofc. Gullett.

Ofc. Gullett served the Prince George's County Police Department for one year and was the 7th member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice.  He was the 9th law enforcement officer to give his life while serving this Profession within Prince George's County, Maryland.

  At the time of his death, Officer William W. Gullett, Jr. was 22 years old and survived by his parents.

UPDATE: PGPD Looking for Missing Man



UPDATE: Mario-Antonio Hernadez Hill was located Sunday, February 19, 2012 at approximately 3:00 p.m, in good health.  He was found at a family member’s residence in Seat Pleasant, Maryland.

     Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s District I Investigative Section is looking for Mario-Antonio Hernadez Hill who was last seen in Cheverly, Maryland.

     On February 16, 2012, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Hill walked out of Prince George’s Hospital where he was awaiting psychological evaluation after threatening to harm himself. Hill was last seen walking from Prince George’s Hospital towards 57th Avenue.

     Hill is described as a black male, 30 years-old, 6’1” tall, approximately 190 pounds, with a short afro hair cut and goatee, last seen wearing a tan hospital gown and white socks.

Suspects Wanted in Armed Robbery in Suitland

     The Prince George’s County Police Department's Robbery Unit is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspects shown in these surveillance photographs. On February 15th 2012, at approximately 3:00 p.m. the suspects committed an armed robbery at the State Cleaners located in the 4600 block of Suitland Road in Suitland, Maryland. One of the suspects was seen wearing a distinct jacket. The jacket is believed to be a “Polo” brand jacket with logo’s on the front and back. The jacket is black with red stripes down the sleeves.

Police Make Arrest in Non-Fatal Shooting on 85th Avenue

     Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s District I Investigative Section has arrested 19 year-old Antione Freeman in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred in New Carrollton, Maryland.


     On February 10, 2012 at approximately 7:40 p.m., New Carrollton police officers were monitoring a memorial vigil in the 5200 block of 85th Avenue regarding the February 6, 2012 murder of Chris Smith. A gunshot was heard and the crowd began to rapidly disperse. An adult male was located suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. That victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

     Detectives developed Freeman as the suspect during the course of their investigation. An arrest warrant was obtained for Freeman charging him with attempted first degree murder. He was arrested on February 11, 2012 without incident. Freeman, a resident of the 7100 block of Webster Street in Landover Hills, was remanded to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a no bond status.

PGPD Officers Honored for Heroic Rescue at Apartment Building Fire

Prince George’s County, Maryland… Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor and Prince George’s County Chief of Police Mark A. Magaw honored four Prince George’s County Police Officers this morning for their heroic actions in an apartment building fire at 4711 Berwyn House Road in College Park last weekend.

At the College Park Fire Station #812, Chief Bashoor presented the Fire Chief’s Award to 14-year veteran Corporal Eric N. Lee, seven-year veteran Corporal Matthew P. Ling, five-year veteran Police Officer First Class Daniel Gonzalez, and four-year veteran Police Officer First Class Jonathan A. Eyler.  Each received award certificates and letters of commendation from Fire Chief Bashoor for their acts of bravery and service to the community.

On February 4^th, 2012, at approximately 2:30 p.m., all four officers were working in the College Park area when they observed heavy smoke billowing from the sixth floor of the Spellman House Apartments which houses seniors and the mobility impaired.  Without hesitation or protective equipment, they entered the smoke-filled hallways and made their way to the sixth floor.  After locating the apartment where the fire had originated, they forced their way through the smoke and heat to check for occupants.  After finding no one was in that apartment, they made their way back downstairs, assisting the building’s remaining occupants to safety.

“These heroic actions typify the law enforcement professionals who work for our agency.  Each one of these officers did not think twice about risking their own lives in order to bring others to safety.  I want to thank them for their dedication, valor, and commitment to the residents of Prince George’s County,” stated Chief Mark Magaw.

PGPD Officers to be Honored for Apartment Building Fire Rescue

Prince George’s County, Maryland… Prince George’s County Fire Chief Mark S. Bashoor will present award certificates and letters of commendation to three Prince George’s County Police Officers for their heroic actions in an apartment building fire in College Park. On Saturday, February 4th, 2012, three officers working in the College Park area noticed heavy smoke billowing from the sixth floor of The Spellman House Apartments located at 4711 Berwyn House Road. Without hesitation or protective equipment, all three officers entered the smoke-filled hallways and quickly evacuated those inside the building to safety.

Police Investigate Murder on 61st Place

     Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the murder of 19 year-old Devon Mansa Gilkes in Riverdale, Maryland.


     On February 8, 2012, at approximately 10:16 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 6400 block of 61st Place for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Devon Mansa Gilkes suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

     Detectives are working to identify the suspect(s) and establish a motive in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Police Seek Identity of Suspect in Armed Robbery of 7-Eleven in Lanham

The Prince George’s County Police Department is working to identify the suspect shown in the above surveillance photograph. On February 9th, 2012, at approximately 3:33 a.m., the suspect committed an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven store located at 9002 Lanham Severn Road in Lanham, Maryland.

PGPD Announces Results of the 2012 January Initiative

Prince George’s County, Maryland…. Prince George’s County Police Chief Mark A. Magaw is pleased to announce the results of the 2012 January Initiative.  The initiative, which ran for five consecutive weeks, was conducted during a 24 hour, seven day a week period.  The initiative included police officers from the Bureau of Patrol, Narcotics Enforcement Division, Special Operations Division, Special Investigations Division, Traffic Enforcement Unit, Special Assignment Teams, Robbery Suppression and Burglary Suppression Teams.  Each unit conducted proactive enforcement operations in communities inside the Beltway that have been identified as having a high propensity for criminal activity. 

“The incredible amount of work done by the officers involved in this program only exemplifies our commitment to making these communities safer,” said Major Joseph McCann.

During the initiative, officers made a total of 551 arrests that included two murder arrests, three attempted murder arrests, 23 robberies or attempted robbery arrests and three carjacking arrests and seized 54 handguns. Officers recovered illegal drugs with a street value totaling nearly $100,000.

“Our community deserves the very best that we have to offer. With that, I want to assure our community that we will continue to work together in partnership to reduce crime,” said Chief Mark A. Magaw.

Carlos F. Acosta Named Inspector General for Prince George’s County Police Department

Prince George’s County Maryland…Prince George’s Police Chief Mark A. Magaw is pleased to announce the appointment of Carlos F. Acosta as Inspector General for the Prince George’s County Police Department.  On January 30, 2012, Carlos F. Acosta officially began serving as Inspector. He oversees the Department’s Internal Affairs Division.  He is responsible for investigating systemic or specific issues affecting the police department’s operations.

Mr. Acosta is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park (B.A. and M.A.) and the Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas where he received his J.D.  He joins the Department following positions as Deputy State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, Trial Attorney for the United States Department of Justice Criminal Division’s Gang Squad, Special Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and an Assistant State’s Attorney for the Montgomery County, Maryland Office of the State’s Attorney.  Mr. Acosta is currently an adjunct Associate Professor of Law at the American University – Washington College of Law.  He served as a faculty member for the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina.  Mr. Acosta has been a lecturer both domestically and internationally for various Department of Justice agencies, the Financial Action Task Force-Le Groupe d’Action Financiére (FATF-GAFI) and the United Nations Development Programme.

            “My focus is on transparency and accountability. The Prince George’s County Police Department is only as good as the faith the community has in it,” said Mr. Acosta.

PGPD Officer arrested for DUI in St. Mary’s County

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigation Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the arrest of Prince George’s County Police Corporal Derrick Neumer.

On February 7, 2012, the Maryland State Police arrested Corporal Neumer in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and charged him with driving under the influence and related traffic charges to include speeding. Corporal Neumer was off duty and not driving a departmental vehicle. Corporal Neumer is a 13-year member of the department, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol/District IV. His police powers have been suspended. An administrative investigation has been initiated by the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigation Response Team.

PGPD Fallen Hero: Officer Raymond Hubbard (02/08/82)

Let us pause to remember our Fallen Hero, Officer Raymond Hubbard, lost this day in 1982 while attempting to apprehend armed robbery suspects in King Sector.

Officer Hubbard was born on January 1, 1954 in Warner Robbins, Georgia. He served with honor and distinction in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged in January, 1979. Immediately thereafter, Officer Hubbard joined the Alexandria Police Department and served with that agency for the next 14 months. On April 7, 1980, Officer Hubbard joined the Prince George’s County Police Department and was subsequently assigned to the Oxon Hill Station.

On February 8, 1982, at approximately 1800 hours, Officer Hubbard was shopping at Iverson Mall located at 3737 Branch Avenue in Temple Hills, Maryland, while off-duty. He observed an armed robbery in progress at the Kay Jewelers being committed by several armed suspects. Officer Hubbard immediately drew his service weapon and challenged the suspects as they exited the establishment. The suspects refused to surrender and an exchange of gunfire ensued, during which Officer Hubbard was fatally wounded.

Officer Hubbard served the Prince George’s County Police Department for two years and was the 12th member of this Agency to make the Ultimate Sacrifice. He was the 19th law enforcement officer to give his life while serving this profession within Prince George’s County, Maryland.

At the time of his death, Officer Raymond Hubbard was 28 years old and survived by his mother.

Police Investigate Murder on 85th Avenue

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the murder of 16 year-old Christopher Donald Smith in New Carrollton, Maryland.    

On February 6, 2012, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a passerby observed a body along a wood line near the 5300 block of 85th Avenue and called 911.  Patrol officers responded and found Smith, of the 2300 block of Brightseat Road in Landover, lying near a sediment pond suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  He was pronounced dead on scene. 

Detectives are working to identify the suspect(s) and establish a motive in this case.   The investigation is ongoing.

Police Investigate Murder on 78th Avenue

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the murder of 23 year-old Alfonso Edward Thompson Jr. in West Lanham Hills, Maryland.    

On February 6, 2012, at approximately 11:32 p.m., an ambulance unit from the West Lanham Hills Fire Department observed a body along the side of the road in the 5000 block of 78^th Avenue.  Patrol officers arrived and found Thompson, of the7000 block of Hanover Parkway in Greenbelt, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.   He was pronounced dead on scene. 

Detectives are working to identify the suspect(s) and establish a motive in this case.   The investigation is ongoing.

Warrant Obtained for Third Suspect in Old Fort Road Homicide Investigation

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has obtained an arrest warrant for 26 year-old Tyrone Lewis in connection with the homicide of Lenwood “Lenny” Harris in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Homicide detectives developed Lewis, of Temple Hills, 20 year-old Ivan Newman, of Waldorf, and 49 year-old Linwood Johnson, of Oxon Hill, as suspects.  Lewis is being held on detainer for First Degree Murder, Robbery, and Reckless Endangerment.  Newman has been charged with First Degree Murder, Robbery, and Kidnapping.  Johnson has been charged with First Degree Murder.  Lewis is currently detained in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on unrelated charges.  Both Newman and Johnson have been remanded to the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections on a no bond status.  The investigation revealed the motive was robbery.  This is an ongoing investigation.

On January 26, 2012, at approximately 12:07 p.m., police received an anonymous call that a body was in a well in the 11900 block of Old Fort Road.  Patrol officers arrived on scene and established a crime scene.  With the assistance of the Prince George’s County Fire Department, Department of Environmental Resources, the Department of Public Works, the Health Department and the excavating company, “Dirt Plus”, the body was recovered on Saturday, January 28, 2012.  The Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the body on Sunday, January 29, 2012.

PGPD Announces Investigative Discovery in Police-Involved Shooting in Brentwood

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigation Response Team (SIRT) has discovered video tape evidence that does not support the initial version of events reported regarding the February 3, 2012 police-involved shooting in Brentwood.  As a result of this discovery, the PGPD has requested the State’s Attorney’s Office amend the criminal charges against Ryan Keith Dorm. 

Corporal Donald Taylor, the police officer who discharged his firearm, and a witnessing police officer have been suspended as SIRT continues its probe.

UPDATE: The involved officer has been identified as 13-year veteran Corporal Donald Taylor, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District I. He remains on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred in Brentwood, Maryland, last night.

On February 3, 2012, at approximately 9:40 p.m., detectives from the District I Robbery Suppression Team (RST) were working an assignment near Rhode Island Avenue and 38th Street. At one point detectives observed two individuals, one wearing a mask, enter the Lowest Price Gas convenience store located in the 3800 block of Rhode Island Avenue. Believing that the two suspects were about to commit a robbery, RST detectives confronted the suspects. One of the suspects swung at the involved officer and began to flee. The officer caught up to the suspect after a brief foot pursuit, during which time the suspect began to reach for the officer’s firearm. Fearing that the suspect was attempting to take control of his firearm, the officer discharged his weapon at the suspect and made the apprehension. There were no reported injuries from the firearm discharge.

The suspect, later identified as Ryan Keith Dorm, 19, of the 4100 block of Parkwood Court in Cottage City, Maryland, has been charged with attempted second degree assault and attempt to disarm a law enforcement officer. He has been remanded to the Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.

The involved officer, a 13 year veteran, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District I, has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
