PGPD Makes Arrest in Mount Rainier Sexual Assault

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit has arrested Edwin Xavier Rivas, 24, in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in Mount Rainier, Maryland.

On January 28, 2012, at approximately 2:30 a.m., patrol officers responded to the 3300 block of Buchannan Street for a report of a sexual assault.  Upon their arrival, they located a woman who reported that an unknown man approached her from behind as she was walking down the street.  Armed with a knife, the suspect sexually assaulted  her and fled on foot.

Detectives were able to identify Rivas, of the 6100 block of 39^th Place in Hyattsville, as a suspect through the course of their investigation.  Rivas was arrested today in the 3100 block of Hamilton Street in Hyattsville without incident. Rivas has also been charged in a sexual assault being investigated by the Hyattsville Police Department. Detectives are looking into the possibility that Rivas may be responsible for other sexual assaults.  The investigation is ongoing.
