PGPD Wins 2011 Law Enforcement Challenge

The Prince George's County Police Department won the 2011 Law Enforcement Challenge and as a result, will receive five-thousand dollars for traffic safety equipment.  Cpl. Mike Rose of the PGPD, Special Operations Division (SOD) submitted the winning application for the department.

Winning a 2011 Maryland LEC Award signifies excellence in enforcement and a commitment to traffic safety. More importantly, winning a 2011 Maryland LEC Award is a much greater indicator of a LEA's commitment to overall public safety.

The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) is a program designed to promote competition among Maryland Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), while recognizing and honoring those Law Enforcement Agencies, excelling in traffic safety enforcement.  Effective enforcement of Maryland's traffic safety laws is the focal point of this program.

Throughout 2011, Maryland's LEAs were tasked with enforcement activities in all three major emphasis areas as well as other significant traffic safety operations. Such operations include but are not limited to, the enforcement of laws to protect pedestrians and bicyclists, enforcing laws to improve safety for motorcyclists and the enforcement of Maryland's young driver laws.

The three main areas – aggressive driving prevention, impaired driving prevention and occupant protection  are the focal points of Maryland’s LEC and are also national priorities.

The Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, the Maryland Sheriff’s Association, and the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) co-sponsor this very important statewide initiative. These organizations believe that the Maryland LEC is vital to maintaining effective traffic safety enforcement. Additionally, the program is a way for the MHSO to communicate its overall highway safety objectives and to help focus LEAs on the issues facing Maryland motorists.
