PGPD Aviation Unit Wins National Award


The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Aviation Unit finished in 2nd place in the 2012 Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) Vision Awards. The FLIR Vision Awards are presented annually to the aviation teams with the best video footage.
 
This year, the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Aviation Unit’s Cpl. Todd Dolihite and Cpl. Brian Catlett won 2nd place for an outstanding apprehension with K-9.

Every year, the top 3 videos are sponsored for a FLIR Vision Award. These awards are then presented at the Annual Airborne Law Enforcement Association’s national convention. The FLIR Awards also gives its recipients a cash prize of $1000.00 to donate to their charity of choice. This year, the Aviation Unit chose to donate their winnings to HEROES Inc.

FLIR systems thermal images are powerful tools in the fight against crime. Through state of the art thermal imaging technology, it allows law enforcement officers to see suspects in total darkness, through smoke, moderate fog, and light foliage. A FLIR thermal imager allows law enforcement officers to see the suspect, without giving away their location.
