PGPD Homicide Detective Prevents Possible Homicide

A Prince George’s County Police homicide detective stopped a violent assault and likely prevented a homicide.

On Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 10:30 pm, Detective Mike Ebaugh was leaving the District III station at 7600 Barlowe Road in Palmer Park when he heard what he calls a wail for help.   Detective Ebaugh got into his car and rolled down all of the windows to follow the noise.  As he approached the corner of Allendale Drive and Barlowe Road, he heard what he describes as metal hitting an object.  Moments later, he witnessed the suspect strike a nearly lifeless man with a shovel to the head.  With no time to call for backup, Detective Ebaugh drew his handgun and ordered the suspect to stop, just as the suspect was poised to hit the victim once again.  The suspect complied with the detective’s orders and surrendered.  Detective Ebaugh called for backup and for emergency help for the victim.

The victim remains in the hospital this afternoon.   The 48 year-old suspect, David Eugene Hamilton, of the 2000 block of Ray Leonard Road in Palmer Park, is charged with first degree assault.

Detective Mike Ebaugh is an eight-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department.
