PGPD Investigates Fatal Collision Involving Toddler

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a fatal collision in Oxon Hill that killed a three year-old toddler.

On February 20, 2013, around 7:30 pm, patrol officers were called to the 600 block of Audrey Lane for the report of a pedestrian accident.   Upon arrival, patrol officers learned a three year-old boy had been involved in the collision. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.  He is identified as Dominic Watkins, Jr. of the 600 block of Audrey Lane in Oxon Hill.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the child’s father had parked his car in front of an apartment complex on Audrey Lane. The father got out in order to pick up his two young children.  He left the engine running, leaving another adult family member inside the car.  While the father held his two-year old daughter, the three year-old ran to the car to greet the family member.  That’s when the father noticed the car rolling backwards.  He dropped his daughter and jumped into the car in hopes of stopping it.  At some point,  the three year-old fell out and was run over.  The two year-old daughter was hurt from the fall but her injuries are not life-threatening. She remains hospitalized.  The father was not hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.  It does not appear that foul play or alcohol played a factor.
