Fatal Pedestrian Collision Appears to be Weather-Related

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred earlier this morning in Hyattsville. The deceased is identified as 24-year-old Jose Martin Huaman of the 4900 block of 42nd Place in Hyattsville.

On January 13, 2014, at about 7:30 am, patrol officers were called to the 4800 block of Rhode Island Avenue for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian. When they arrived, patrol officers found Huaman suffering from critical injuries. A Prince George’s County Police Department patrol officer provided CPR to the victim until paramedics arrived but unfortunately, the man later died at a hospital.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of a Ford, a 44-year-old female, was traveling northbound on Rhode Island Avenue when it hit a patch of ice. The driver lost control of the vehicle, struck the median, crossed into the southbound lane, struck Huaman in the roadway, and crashed into the front of the store.

There have been no charges filed at this point. The collision remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit at (301) 731-4422.
