Update: PGPD investigators have verified an adult female passenger was in the cruiser with our fatally wounded officer. The woman, whose identity will not be released, suffered minor injuries in the crash. She was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries and extreme emotional distress. She has been sedated since this morning and investigators haven't been able to talk with her about the circumstances of the crash. Police Officer Rabain was off duty until he chose to take police action early this morning, engaging his lights and sirens and attempting to conduct a traffic stop. Our detectives continue to try to learn more about the fleeing vehicle and the circumstances surrounding that driver's decision to flee. When we have definitive information about the vehicle, we'll share that with our community.
Police Officer Brennan Rabain
Early this morning, an
officer with the Prince George’s County Department was involved in a fatal
collision in the 9500 block of Greenbelt Road in Lanham.
The preliminary
investigation reveals Police Officer Brennan Rabain was attempting to make a
traffic stop at about 3:30 am when, for reasons still unknown, his cruiser left
the roadway and struck a wooden fence. The 26-year-old officer was pronounced
dead on the scene.
“He was a young officer.
Loved this department, loved this County,” said Police Chief Mark Magaw. “He
was a fine officer.” Chief Magaw authorized the department's wearing of a
mourning band to honor our fallen officer, who had been with the PGPD for less
than two years. He leaves behind a three-year-old daughter. We'd like to thank
the community for its overwhelming show of support.
