National Police Week 2016: PGPD Honors Fallen Law Enforcement Officers


It’s a time to pause and honor fellow police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, including our own Detective Jacai Colson who we lost in March. Members of the Prince George's County Police Department will take part in several events scheduled during National Police Week, which runs from May 3-16, 2016. Law enforcement officers from across the country will gather in Washington, DC to pay tribute to fallen heroes.

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Annual Blue Mass
The Blue Mass will be held at 12:10 pm at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (10th & G Streets, NW, Washington, DC).

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

PGPD Command Officers’ Association Memorial Service
The PGPD COA Memorial Service will be held in the County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro at 7:00 pm. Detective Jacai Colson’s name will be added to the memorial. This service honors law enforcement officers of all agencies who have died in the line of duty serving Prince George’s County.

Fallen Heroes Day at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens  
The service is held at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 East Padonia Road, Timonium, MD, at 1:00 pm.  The ceremony honors the men and women of Maryland public safety community who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Honorees will include Corporal Jacai Colson and Lieutenant John Ulmschneider.

Fraternal Order of Police, Prince George's County, Lodge 89 Annual Police Memorial Service 
Each year, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89 holds a memorial service honoring the 29 Prince George's County Police Officers killed in the line of duty.  This service pays a living tribute to the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties. 

This year the service will be held on Thursday, May 12th, 2016, at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89, 2905 Old Largo Road in Upper Marlboro. The memorial service will begin at 10:00 am. 

Police Unity Tour Arrival Ceremony
Arrival ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm. Since 1997, the Police Unity Tour has raised nearly 16 million dollars for the NLEOMF.

28th Annual Candlelight Vigil
The candlelight vigil will be held at 8:00 pm. The event is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Saturday, May 14, 2016

20th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run (Leaving Philadelphia, PA, on Thursday, May 12, 2016 and arriving in Washington, DC on Saturday, May 14, 2016)
Each year, a group of officers runs from Philadelphia to Washington, DC to honor the fallen officers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.  The run began 20 years ago with a very small group and now has evolved into a group of 90 participants.

There will be a ceremony at the Prince George’s County Police District I Station (5000 Rhode Island Ave. Hyattsville, MD) on Saturday May 14, 2016 at approximately 10:15 am to honor fallen officers from Maryland.  The PGPD’s fallen hero, PFC Brennan Rabain will be honored. The run will then continue on to the NLEOM in Washington, DC.

10th Annual National Police Week 5K
From 9:00 am to 11:00 am
400 F St. NW - 4th Street & F Street NW, Washington, DC
The National Police Week 5K is hosted by the Officer Down Memorial Page to honor fallen law enforcement officers by raising awareness to the sacrifices officers make every day.

22nd Annual Emerald Society & Pipe Band March and Service
4:30 pm  Assemble at New Jersey Avenue and F Street in Northwest Washington

15th Annual Steve Young National Honor Guard Competition and Pipe Band Competition
This event is hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police and takes place at the Grant Statue

Sunday, May 15, 2016

35th Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service
Sponsored by the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. The Memorial Service will be held on the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The service begins at 11:00 am.
