Detectives Arrest Suspect in 10-Year-Old Cold Case Homicide

Our Homicide Unit arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide investigation in Landover Hills from 2007. The suspect is 49-year-old Darryl Strickland of the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southwest Washington.

On April 6th, 2007, at about 6:00 am, patrol officers were called to a motel in the 3900 block of 62nd Avenue for a reported medical emergency. When officers arrived, they discovered the victim, 44-year-old Sharon Cunningham of Northeast Washington, unresponsive. She was pronounced dead on the scene. An autopsy determined the victim was strangled and ruled her death a homicide.

Based on new information from a witness, detectives were able to arrest and charge Strickland with the homicide. The suspect and victim had been involved in a previous relationship.

Strickland is in the custody of the Department of Corrections. He is charged with first and second degree murder. He is being held on a no-bond status.
