Detectives Charge Suspect With Attempted Murder in Connection With Domestic-Related Arson

UPDATE Thursday, November 2, 2017: Our detectives made a second arrest in the attempted murder and domestic-related arson case below. The suspect is identified as 27 year old Jonathan Edward Miller of the 3200 block of 28thParkway in Temple Hills. Miller assisted Laquinn Phillips in the commission of the crime during which an adult pregnant woman suffered severe burns.

Detectives charged a suspect for intentionally setting a pregnant woman on fire at her home in Capitol Heights on Friday. The suspect is 34-year-old Laquinn Phillips of the 2100 block of Ridgecrest Court in Southeast Washington. The victim is in critical condition. The suspect and victim had been in a romantic relationship. Doctors delivered her unborn baby at a hospital. The baby is also in critical condition. 

On September 8th, at approximately 11:45 am, first responders were called about an apartment fire in the 1400 block of Elkwood Lane. Once on scene, they discovered the adult female victim outside suffering from severe burns. She had fled the apartment seeking help. The victim was able to provide information about the fire and who was responsible. Based on that information and additional investigation, Prince George's County Police detectives identified Phillips as the suspect. Upon speaking with one of our detectives, Phillips agreed to turn himself in. With the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department, Phillips was arrested in the District outside of his home a short time later.

Phillips is charged with attempted first and second degree murder, arson, assault and several additional related charges. He remains in custody in the District awaiting extradition to Prince George's County. The motive in this case is still under investigation.
