PGPD Investigating Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Temple Hills

Updated September 18, 2018: The involved officer is identified as Corporal Joseph Keifline. He is a 10-year veteran of the department and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Temple Hills on Monday morning.   The deceased suspect is 23 year old Jose Alvarez of the 3700 block of Del Mar Drive in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Jose Alvarez
The preliminary investigation reveals that on September 17th, at 7:21 am, a citizen called 911 asking for officers to be dispatched to the 3300 block of Huntley Square Drive after seeing a suspect stealing items from his car. As requested, officers responded and saw a man matching the description given by the caller. As one patrol officer attempted to speak to the suspect, the suspect ran across the street to Brinkley Road and was seen entering an apartment building. While he was running, the suspect tossed two license plates he had stolen earlier.  Officers found the suspect hiding in a laundry room and gave him repeated verbal commands to surrender but he did not comply. The officers and the suspect then began to struggle. One officer attempted to use a taser on the suspect, but it did not take effect. The suspect then produced a handgun from his waistband. One of the officers managed to get his hand on the suspect’s gun in an attempt to prevent him from pointing it at any of the officers. The suspect fired his gun.  Based on initial forensic analysis of the suspect’s gun, the involved officers’ guns, and additional video evidence, we have now learned that the suspect fired his weapon twice. One of the officers returned fire one time, striking the suspect.  Jose Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer who grabbed the gun did suffer an injury to his hand when the suspect discharged his weapon. The suspect’s gun was recovered in the laundry room. It is pictured below.

A resident in the apartment complex recorded the police presence outside of her building moments before the shooting took place. The resident’s cell phone recording captures the sounds of the three gunshots.

Regarding the two prior shootings to which she refers in the video, one allegedly occurred two weeks ago when a witness says a male fired a gun towards a female.  That was not reported to police until today.   Detectives are working to verify the incident.  The second case happened yesterday and involved a group of males in a car shooting another car.   No one was injured.   Our officers were called, responded to the area, and recovered a shell casing at the scene.  The earlier reported non-contact shooting and the vandalism by gunfire cases are being handled by our Regional Investigation Detectives.

The involved officer in this morning’s incident is now on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation which is standard procedure.   The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office reviews all officer-involved shootings.

If anyone has information in this investigation, they are asked to please call detectives at 301-856-2660. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Solversat 1-866-411-TIPS (8477), or go online at www.pgcrimesolvers.com, or use the “P3 Tips” mobile app (search “P3 Tips” in the Apple Store or Google Play to download the app onto your mobile device.)

PGPD Investigating Off-Duty Baltimore City Police Officer-Involved Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department continues to investigate a non-contact shooting involving an off-duty Baltimore City Police officer. The incident occurred on September 7th at approximately 2:10 pm in District Heights.

The preliminary investigation reveals the off-duty officer observed a suspect breaking into the officer’s personally-owned truck that was parked in a shopping center parking lot in the 5800 block of Silver Hill Road.  Preliminarily, it’s believed the suspect targeted the officer’s truck. Prior to stopping at a restaurant on Silver Hill Road, the officer had been at a gun range in the county.  The investigation revealed the suspect was also at the gun range and followed the officer to District Heights.  The suspect broke into the officer’s truck when it became unoccupied and took a bag from inside containing several weapons.  The officer saw the suspect breaking into his truck and taking the bag.  The officer went to confront the suspect. The officer discharged a firearm toward the suspect who fled in a car.  The suspect’s car and the bag containing the officer’s weapons were recovered nearby minutes later.

This remains an active investigation. Any additional information regarding the suspect and the theft from the truck will be released when the investigation allows. As with all officer-involved shootings, the Prince George’s County Police Department will present the findings of our investigation to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

PGPD Release Surveillance Video of Arrest of Stabbing Suspect at Forestville Store

Marbury Green

Today, we are releasing store surveillance video of Prince George’s County Police officers subduing and arresting a man who had just repeatedly stabbed a man inside of a Forestville store.  Following the stabbing, the suspect held a woman at knifepoint.  The suspect is 26-year-old Curtis Marbury-Green of the 6200 block of Alpine Street in District Heights.

On August 29th, at approximately 12:00 pm, an off-duty PGPD officer was working a part-time security position at the store on Donnell Drive when he heard a commotion and went to investigate.  Just as the officer walked into the area of the store where the stabbing had just occurred, Marbury-Green brushed past him and grabbed a woman who was attempting to leave the store.  Marbury-Green held a knife to the female victim’s throat and started to drag her through the store’s parking lot.  On the surveillance video, you see the officer with his duty-weapon drawn.  The officer walked in step with the suspect while calmly asking him to drop the knife and to let go of the woman.  Using his other hand, the officer radioed for back up and provided updates.

As responding officers arrived, they determined the exact location of the officer and suspect.  One officer, using a Taser approached the suspect and deployed the Taser.  The suspect fell to the ground.  Officers pulled him away from the female victim.  She was uninjured.  Several of the officers including the off-duty officer who initially witnessed the stabbing in the store and who had held the suspect at bay, then ran into the store to provide aid to the stabbing victim.   At the time, the stabbing victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.  We have since learned that he is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect and female victim are in a relationship.  The suspect and male victim were friends.  The motive for the stabbing is under investigation.

Marbury-Green is being held without bond for two counts of attempted 1st degree murder, two counts of 1st degree assault and other several related charges.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to please call 301-772-4433.
