Today
at noon, Chief Stawinski and the Department’s Executive Command Staff became
aware of a cell phone recording of two officers detaining a suspect at a
Langley Park gas station. While attempting to handcuff the suspect, one of the
officers kicked him twice. Upon reviewing the video, the two involved officers
and their immediate supervisor were suspended pending the outcome of the
investigation.
“I
am sorry and I am angry. I am sharing the video in the interest of
transparency. During my tenure as Chief of Police, four officers have been
criminally prosecuted for assault. This will be thoroughly investigated and in
keeping with past practice, the findings will be referred to the Office of the
State’s Attorney,” said Chief Hank Stawinski.
The
preliminary investigation revealed the officer who used force observed an
assault and attempted to detain the involved suspects. After a foot chase that
ended at the gas station, he was able to handcuff one suspect. He is then seen
on the video taking the second suspect to the ground. When a backup officer
arrived, that second officer assisted the first officer in the apprehension.
During that attempt to handcuff the suspect, the first officer kicked the
suspect. The two suspects were ultimately released when the assault victim
could not be located.

Jefe de la Policía Hank Stawinski Suspende a Tres
Oficiales; Lanzan Investigación de Asuntos Internos En Respuesta a Uso de
Fuerza
Hoy a mediodía, el Jefe de la Policía
Hank Stawinski y el personal del Comité Ejecutivo se enteraron de una grabación
de celular que mostraba a dos oficiales quienes detenían a un sospechoso en una
gasolinera de Langley Park. Mientras intentaban esposar al sospechoso, uno de
los oficiales le pateó dos veces. Tras revisar el vídeo, los dos oficiales
involucrados junto a su supervisor inmediato fueron suspendidos mientras
aguardan el resultado de la investigación.
“Lamento la situación y estoy furioso
por ella. Estoy compartiendo el video con tal de ser transparentes. Durante mi
tiempo como Jefe de la Policía, hemos acusado criminalmente a cuatro oficiales
por agresión. Este incidente será investigado a cabalidad y, siguiendo lo que
ha sido nuestra práctica, será referido a la Oficina del Fiscal Estatal,”
declaró el Jefe de la Policía, Hank Stawinski.
La investigación preliminar reveló que
el oficial que utilizó fuerza había observado una agresión e intentó detener a
los sospechosos involucrados. Luego de una persecución que acabó en la
gasolinera, éste pudo esposar a un sospechoso. Luego en el vídeo se puede ver a
éste llevando al suelo al segundo sospechoso. Una vez llegó un oficial de
refuerzo, ese segundo oficial asistió al primero con el arresto. Durante este
intento por esposar al sospechoso, el primer oficial le pateó. Al final ambos
sospechosos fueron puestos en libertad tras la Policía no haber podido localizar
a la víctima de la agresión.
