PGPD Investigates Pedestrian Hit and Run in Adelphi

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a hit and run in Adelphi that left a pedestrian in critical condition.

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, at approximately 3:15 p.m., police officers responded to the 2000 block of University Boulevard for a call of a pedestrian struck. Upon arrival, they found a 21 year-old male lying in the road. He was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition as of Sunday evening. The striking vehicle continued eastbound on University Boulevard without stopping.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of the striking vehicle, described as a gold sedan (possibly a Honda), and a second vehicle were seen racing near University Boulevard and Riggs Road. The pedestrian was struck as he stepped into the roadway. He was not in a crosswalk. The second vehicle crashed and its driver was taken into custody.

The Prince George's County Police Department along with the Maryland State Police continue to promote strategies to curb aggressive driving. These strategies focus on drivers who demonstrate a blatant disregard for traffic laws and community safety, as witnessed this week with two separate vehicle races in the county. One of those races led to the death of an involved driver in Seat Pleasant on Friday, October 19.

The second led to the pedestrian hit-and-run in Adelphi. Both of those races were done in areas not known for street racing. Law enforcement will monitor major thoroughfares through the use of unmarked and marked patrol units, as well as PGPD's Aviation Unit. The helicopters are armed with a new video downlink system which will help law enforcement monitor and rapidly react to aggressive drivers. Citizens are also urged to notify police if they witness dangerous drivers in an effort to achieve Maryland's Zero Death initiative.
