Prince George’s County Police Officer Charged with Theft and Misconduct in Office

A PGPD Commander identified a sworn police officer involved in a suspected theft incident at the agency’s Property Warehouse on January 18, 2012.  The Special Investigation Response Team (SIRT) immediately initiated an investigation, and coordinated their efforts with the State’s Attorney’s Office.  The State’s Attorney’s Office filed a Criminal Information charging document with the District Court of Maryland on March 27, and the police officer was served with the charging document on April 2.

The police powers of Police Officer Martin Abundez, a six-year veteran assigned to the Property Warehouse, have been suspended and he has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal court case.  Abundez has been charged with two counts of theft and two counts of misconduct in office.

“While I am disappointed that a police officer would engage in suspected criminal misconduct, I applaud the Commander who acted immediately to address this serious breach of the public trust,” stated Chief of Police Mark Magaw.
