The Prince
George’s County Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division launched an
investigation after a suspect suffered what could be a potentially critical
injury while trying to flee an arrest in Oxon Hill on Thursday.
A patrol
officer pulled over a car with expired tags at approximately 5:35 pm in the
4700 block of Wheeler Road. The suspect was driving the car with a young child
inside. During the stop, the officer called for backup when the driver
repeatedly reached for the center console despite the officer’s repeated
commands to the driver to place his hands on the steering wheel.
The
officer called for backup and returned to his vehicle to wait for the
backup.
When two
additional officers arrived, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle and was
placed into handcuffs for officer safety. He was then escorted away from his
vehicle. The child was then turned over to another adult who arrived on the
scene. As officers attempted to search the suspect and complete the arrest, the
suspect began to strike one of the officers and attempted to escape. In order
to prevent the suspect from striking the officer again, and to prevent him from
escaping, the officer grabbed the suspect’s arm as he was fleeing. The suspect
fell to ground landing on the roadway. He complained of pain and an ambulance
was called immediately. He has since undergone surgery and is in stable
condition
During a
search of the car, a knife was located in the center console. Approximately 30
grams of marijuana were recovered.
The
officer who made the initial stop did record a portion of the traffic stop on
his cruiser’s dash camera. Because the suspect was about to be placed into a
cruiser, he was out of the dash camera’s view when he attempted to flee and was
injured.
The
involved officer is on routine administrative leave.

PGPD Abre Investigación Luego de que Sospechoso
Sufriera Lesiones Mientras Huía de Arresto
La División de Asuntos Internos del
Departamento de la Policía del Condado de Prince George abrió una investigación
luego de que un sospechoso sufriera lo que resultó ser una lesión crítica
mientras intentaba huir de un arresto el jueves en el área de Oxon Hill.
A eso de las 5:35 pm en la cuadra
4700 de Wheeler Road, un oficial de patrulla detuvo a un vehículo que llevaba
tablillas vencidas. El sospechoso manejaba el vehículo y llevaba a un menor
dentro del mismo. Durante la parada, el oficial llamó para que se presentaran
refuerzos luego de que en repetidas ocasiones el sospechoso intentara accesar la
consola central del vehículo pese a las repetidas órdenes que le dio el oficial
de mantener ambas manos sobre el volante.
El oficial hizo un llamado para
recibir refuerzos y regresó a su vehículo mientras aguardaba la llegada de los
otros oficiales.
Una vez le llegaron los dos oficiales
adicionales, los agentes pidieron al conductor que saliera de su vehículo y le
esposaron por razones de seguridad. Le escoltaron lejos de su vehículo y el
menor pasó a manos de otro adulto que llegó a la escena. Una vez los oficiales
intentaron registrar al individuo y completar su arresto, éste agredió a un
oficial e intentó escapar. Con tal de evitar que el sospechoso agrediara al
oficial nuevamente y para prevenir que éste escapara, el oficial le agarró el
brazo mientras intentaba huir. El sospechoso cayó de frente en la carretera.
Luego de esto se quejó de que tenía dolor y de inmediato le llamaron una
ambulancia. Más adelante le operaron y se encuentra en condición estable.
Cuando registraron el vehículo
hallaron una cuchilla en la consola central y recuperaron aproximadamente 30
gramos de marihuana.
El oficial que llevó a cabo la
primera intervención sí logró grabar una porción de la interacción a través de
la cámara de su vehículo. Puesto que el sospechoso estaba por ser colocado en
el vehículo, se encontraba fuera del campo de vista de la cámara cuando intentó
escapar y se lesionó.
El oficial se encuentra bajo ausencia
administrativa protocolar.
