PGPD Issues Tip to Prevent Vehicle Theft

The Prince George’s County Police Department is urging residents to never leave their car keys in the ignition and then leave the running vehicle unattended.  This practice is more common in the colder months, when drivers choose to leave their cars running to warm up.  Auto theft is often a crime of opportunity. The PGPD is currently investigating several jump-in thefts across the county.  In one district, police officers responded to 10 of these thefts in a four-week period from early January to February 2013.

Leaving a vehicle unattended with keys in the ignition is against the law.  Violators could be fined and receive a point toward his or her driving record.
