PGPD Offers Halloween Safety Tips
Prince George’s County, Maryland… In an effort to prepare for a safe Halloween, the Prince George’s County Police Department, along with support from the Maryland State Police College Park and Forestville Barracks, will be conducting high visibility patrols throughout the County to ensure children, parents, and motorists arrive safely to and from their destinations.
Halloween may be a fun holiday for children, but for parents the holiday can be a little tricky. To help parents and children have a safe and enjoyable Halloween, the Prince George’s County Police Department offers the following safety tips:
For Trick-or-Treaters and Parents:
• Wear a costume that makes it easy for you to walk in and to be seen in. An adult should always accompany smaller children.
• Carry a flashlight and make sure that some sort of reflective material is incorporated into the costume.
• Utilize sidewalks when available and try to stay in well-lit areas. Never dart out between parked cars. Always cross at corners and crosswalks.
• An outside light on front of a house is usually a sign that trick-or-treaters are welcome. Avoid going to houses that are not lit.
• Allow an adult to inspect all treats prior to eating them. Only give and accept wrapped candy. If it appears to be tampered with, be on the safe side and discard it.
For Traveling Motorists:
• Drive slowly! Be aware that young trick-or-treaters may dart out from between parked cars.
• Do not drive a vehicle while wearing a mask of any sort. Your visibility could be obscured.
Prince George's County Police Department Found 94% Misuse of Car Seats
Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Certified Child Passenger Seat Technicians conducted a car seat check-up during a community day event hosted by the Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union last Saturday. Virtually all seats were re-installed. Some were replaced during the check-up.
On October 22, 2011, during a day of face-painting, moon bouncing, information sharing and networking, trained car seat checkers, some coming from Anne Arundel and St. Mary’s Counties, went about the business of making sure that car seats and boosters were properly installed and safe for use. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in Maryland, four out of five car seats are installed wrong. In Prince George’s County, that rate is not just too high, it is alarming. Determined to reduce the rate of misuse in car seats, the police department recently trained thirteen of its officers to be Certified Child Passenger Seat Technicians (CPST). Car seat check-ups will be performed regularly throughout the County until the rate of misuse drops.
Technicians are trained by Maryland Kids In Safety Seats (KISS) to check for recalls, ensure that car seats and boosters are installed correctly, that the harness and vehicle installation are correct for the child, and to educate others on the proper installation and use of car seats.
The thirty-two hour course is vigorous, intense, combines classroom and hands-on instruction, and leaves no room for mistakes. Students failing any one of five tests or missing more than an hour of instruction are invited to leave the class.
The eleven Prince George’s County police officers taking the course all succeeded, were presented certificates of completion on Thursday, and performed car seat check-ups on Saturday. In addition to 94% misuse of the car seats checked on Saturday, thirteen were replaced by the Credit Union due to recalls, age, condition, or inappropriateness for the child.

PGPD to Partner with DEA for Second Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
Prince George’s County Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department will be participating in a nationwide initiative seeking to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. On Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 9:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., the Prince George’s County Police Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction.
The Prince George’s County Police Department will have three collection points across the County to include:
• District I Station at 5000 Rhode Island Avenue in Hyattsville
• District III Station at 7600 Barlowe Road in Palmer Park
• District IV Station at 5135 Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill
The Prescription Drug Take-Back program addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. The D.E.A. cites studies that show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet. In addition, many citizens do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.
This event will offer the opportunity for the community to surrender any expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications. This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. For more information, contact the Community Services Division at (301) 909-7126 or go to http://www.dea.gov/ .

The closure of the restaurant marks the second establishment closed under the recently passed CB-18-2011, also known as the Dance Hall Bill, which prohibits businesses to operate as dance halls without a license and who also pose a threat to public safety.
On October 7, 2011, at approximately 3:27 a.m., patrol officers responded to the 3400 block of Dallas Drive, for a report of a shooting. The preliminary investigation revealed the incident stemmed from an altercation that began inside of The Family Restaurant. Two suspects have been arrested and charged with the assaults.
“We’re using our authority under the CB-18-2011 to crack down on nightclubs where violence is prevalent. Closures of such establishments are done to enhance the safety and quality of life of citizens in Prince George’s County,” said Chief Mark Magaw.
“I would like to commend the Prince George’s County Police Department in taking action against establishments that promote violent crime.
