The Prince George’s County Police Department is taking part in the first “Gift Cards for Guns” event of 2013. In an effort to further reduce gun violence in Prince George’s County, the PGPD will accept guns from citizens who voluntarily surrender them. The firearms do not need to be functional. In return, citizens will receive a gift card valued up to $125. The PGPD is proudly partnering with Prince George’s County Council Member Mary Lehman and the Prince George’s County chapter of the NAACP in the effort. Participating citizens should place all firearms, unloaded, in the trunk of their cars. A uniformed police officer will greet them at the door and provide further directions. Unwanted ammunition may be submitted as well. At similar events in 2012, approximately 450 weapons were surrendered.
