The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a motorcycle collision that killed a young child. The victim is seven-year-old Alejandro Santos of Cherrywood Terrace in Greenbelt.
On May 23, 2015, at about 4:00 pm, members of the Hyattsville City Police Department responded to the 3500 block of East West Highway for the report of a collision involving several pedestrians.
Preliminarily, it appears a motorcycle heading westbound on East West Highway collided with a car that was making a left turn into a shopping center. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle then crashed into four pedestrians who were standing on the sidewalk at the crosswalk waiting to cross the street.
All four pedestrians, one man and three children, suffered injuries. Alejandro Santos died at a hospital a short time later. The adult's injuries are considered life-threatening. Of the two surviving children, one suffered critical injuries and the second suffered non-life threatening injuries. The motorcycle rider also suffered non-life threatening injuries. The car's driver suffered minor injuries.
Preliminarily, speed on the part of the motorcycle rider appears to be a factor. The collision remains under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, investigators will present their findings to the State's Attorney's Office for consideration of any charges.
