It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our former Chief of Police and current Prince George’s County Sheriff, Melvin C. High. Sheriff High was a giant of a man. His calming presence, reassuring command style, and exceptional leadership added to his distinguished persona. He began his career in community service in 1969 as a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia where he retired as Assistant Chief of Police.
He went on to serve as the Chief of Police for the city of Norfolk, Virginia. In 2003 he was appointed Chief of Police of Prince George’s County Police Department where he served until 2008. In 2010 Melvin High was elected and sworn in as Prince George’s County Sheriff and was finishing his third term next month. His list of his accomplishments, awards and accolades are many. Praise came from the President of the United States, elected officials, as well as community organizations. However, what Sheriff High cherished most was his loving his family and serving the residents of Prince George’s County.
For each Prince George’s County Police graduation, one student officer is chosen to receive “the leadership award”. On September 28, 2022, as Prince George’s County Police Chief, I directed that award be renamed, “The Melvin C High Leadership Award. The Melvin C High Leadership award is given to the student officer who exemplifies the most exceptional leadership amongst his or her peers throughout the entire Police Academy”. A student recruit will be honored in each academy class graduation with this distinguished award named in his honor.
He cherished his loving wife Brenda, their daughter Tracy, and grandchild Christian. Melvin C. High made Prince George’s Proud!! His Deputies called him Sheriff; The Prince George’s County Police called him Chief. Everybody that knew him called him SIR!!! His fifty-three (53) years of dedicated service to our community and law enforcement is immeasurable. His presence will surely be missed by all.

Melvin High
Con gran pena anunciamos el fallecimiento del Alguacil del Condado de Prince George’s y nuestro previo Jefe Policial, Melvin C. High. El Alguacil High era un gigante de hombre. Su imponente presencia, sosegado estilo de mando y excepcional liderazgo añadían a su distinguida persona. Este comenzó su distinguida carrera en el servicio público en el 1969 como miembro del Departamento de la Policía Metropolitana del Distrito de Columbia, de donde se retiró como Subjefe de la Policía.
Luego pasó a ser Jefe de la Policía en la Ciudad de Norfolk, Virginia. En el 2003 le nombraron Jefe de la Policía del Condado de Prince George’s, en donde trabajó hasta el 2008. En el 2010 Melvin High fue electo y juramentó como Alguacil del Condado de Prince George’s y hubiese terminado su tercer término el próximo mes. Su lista de logros, premios y reconocimientos es extensa. Recibió laudos por parte del Presidente de los Estados Unidos, oficiales electos y organizaciones comunitarias. Sin embargo, lo que más atesoraba el Alguacil High era a su querida familia y el servir a los residentes del Condado de Prince George’s.
En cada graduación de la Policía del Condado de Prince George’s seleccionan a un oficial aprendiz para que reciba el premio por liderazgo. El 28 de septiembre de 2022, como Jefe de la Policía del Condado de Prince George’s, ordené a que se le nombrara a dicho premio “el Premio de Liderazgo Melvin C. High.” Dicho premio se otorga al estudiante que ejemplifique el más excepcional liderazgo entre sus pares durante toda la Academia Policial. Este atesoraba a su querida esposa Brenda, su hija Tracy y a su nieto Christian. Melvin C. High enorgullecía al Condado de Prince George’s. Sus diputados le llamaban Alguacil, la Policía le llamaba Jefe y todo quien le conocía le llamaba SEÑOR. Sus 53 años de servicio a la comunidad y a las agencias del orden público es inmensurable. Sin duda su presencia será extrañada por todos.
