Homicide Unit
detectives identified and charged two suspects for a fatal shooting in Adelphi
last month. The suspects are 19-year-old Freddy Mendez-Cruz of the 7600 block
of 15th Avenue in Takoma Park and 16-year-old Christian Alvarado of
the 2300 block of 4th Street in Northeast DC. They’re charged in
connection with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Ruben Garcia-Ramos of
Adelphi. Alvarado is charged as an adult.
On
March 22nd, at approximately 5:45 pm, patrol officers responded to
the 1900 block of Laguna Road for the report of a shooting. When they arrived
on scene, officers found the victim outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He
died of his injuries several hours later.
The preliminary investigation reveals the fatal
shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Mendez-Cruz and the victim.
Mendez-Cruz and the victim were acquaintances.
Alvarado and
Mendez-Cruz are charged with first and second degree murder. They have
confessed to their involvement. They are both in the custody of the Department
of Corrections on a no-bond status.
