The Prince George’s County Police Department’s
Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CARU) is
conducting the investigation into a
fatal collision on Friday. The decedent is 24-year-old Deshawn Williams of
Butler Street in Southeast Washington, D.C.
The preliminary investigation reveals, on
June 7th, at approximately 8:05 am, a patrol officer was conducting
stationary radar on East Capitol Street in the area of Maryland Park Drive when
his radar detected Williams driving 58 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer
left his post in an effort to conduct a traffic stop on Williams. Williams
turned right off of East Capitol Street where he immediately encountered a
vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign at Old Central Avenue. Williams
is seen traveling into the oncoming lane of traffic around the stopped vehicle.
As he headed westbound on Old Central Avenue, he crossed the double yellow line
into the oncoming single lane of traffic in order to pass at least 4 other
vehicles. Williams then re-entered the westbound lanes near Maryland Park Drive
where he lost control and ultimately struck the gate of a closed business and a
fire hydrant. He was ejected from his vehicle. He died of his injuries a short
time later at a hospital.
