Man Who Stole Ambulance and Led Authorities on Long Pursuit in Custody

William Duron Person

The man who stole an ambulance and then led multiple agencies on a regional pursuit this morning is in custody facing several charges. He’s 43-year-old William Person of the 8600 block of Temple Hills Road in Temple Hills. No members of the community or any first responders were injured during this incident.

This morning, around 6:00 am, crew members with the Prince George’s Fire Department reported their ambulance had been stolen from the Prince George’s Hospital Center. Thanks to a GPS device on the ambulance, officers were able to locate the stolen vehicle as it headed southbound on I-495. At that time, our officers began to pursue the ambulance. The suspect did not stop for our officers and continued driving into Charles County. Deputies and Maryland State Police troopers became involved in the pursuit.

Deputies and troopers continued to pursue the ambulance, which eventually returned to Prince George’s County. The suspect was stopped in the 6300 block of Allentown Road, where deputies, officers and troopers were able to arrest the suspect. He was transported to a hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

“The story here is a tremendously good one, cooperation between Prince George’s County, Charles County and the Maryland State Police, how all of those acting in concert with one another brought this to a safe resolution with no injuries to the public,” said Chief Hank Stawinski.

The suspect is charged with auto theft and malicious destruction of property. Charles County Sheriff deputies will also be charging the suspect for numerous traffic offenses within their jurisdiction.
