PGPD Wins 2011 Law Enforcement Challenge

The Prince George's County Police Department won the 2011 Law Enforcement Challenge and as a result, will receive five-thousand dollars for traffic safety equipment.  Cpl. Mike Rose of the PGPD, Special Operations Division (SOD) submitted the winning application for the department.

Winning a 2011 Maryland LEC Award signifies excellence in enforcement and a commitment to traffic safety. More importantly, winning a 2011 Maryland LEC Award is a much greater indicator of a LEA's commitment to overall public safety.

The Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) is a program designed to promote competition among Maryland Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), while recognizing and honoring those Law Enforcement Agencies, excelling in traffic safety enforcement.  Effective enforcement of Maryland's traffic safety laws is the focal point of this program.

Throughout 2011, Maryland's LEAs were tasked with enforcement activities in all three major emphasis areas as well as other significant traffic safety operations. Such operations include but are not limited to, the enforcement of laws to protect pedestrians and bicyclists, enforcing laws to improve safety for motorcyclists and the enforcement of Maryland's young driver laws.

The three main areas – aggressive driving prevention, impaired driving prevention and occupant protection  are the focal points of Maryland’s LEC and are also national priorities.

The Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, the Maryland Sheriff’s Association, and the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO) co-sponsor this very important statewide initiative. These organizations believe that the Maryland LEC is vital to maintaining effective traffic safety enforcement. Additionally, the program is a way for the MHSO to communicate its overall highway safety objectives and to help focus LEAs on the issues facing Maryland motorists.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY BANK EMPLOYEE EXILED TO OVER THREE YEARS IN PRISON FOR PARTICIPATING IN A BANK ROBBERY

Arranged for Bank Money to be Moved at Time of Robbery for Easier Access to Robbers

Greenbelt, Maryland - Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced Khary Carlton Wood, age 25, of Capitol Heights, Maryland to 42 months in prison  followed by three years of supervised release for aiding and abetting a bank robbery.  Chief Judge Chasanow also ordered Wood to pay restitution of $90,000.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Richard A. McFeely of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Chief Mark A. Magaw of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

According to his plea agreement, Wood worked for Wells Fargo Bank d/b/a Wachovia Bank at its branch at 7700 Landover Road, Landover, Maryland.  Wood helped others rob the bank by providing twin brothers Darnell Davis and Ronnell Davis with information about bank operations, including the timing and moving of money within the bank; recruiting another bank employee to move money within the bank at the same time the robbery was planned so that the money would be easily accessible to the robbers; and arranging for the other bank employee to be compensated from the robbery proceeds.  Wood knew that the robbers would be using guns during the robbery.

On January 11, 2011, the Davis brothers and Cortez Maurice Mallory robbed the bank. Two of them entered the bank masked and armed with guns, while the other waited outside in a getaway car.  As planned, the other bank employee carried a bag containing $90,000 to the ATM machine when the masked robbers took the bag from the employee and fled.

Darnell and Ronnell Davis, both age 26 of Severn, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., respectively, and Coretz Maurice Mallory, age 27, of Clinton, Maryland, pleaded guilty to their participation in the robbery and to an attempted robbery of another bank’s ATM which caused $28,000 in damage to the ATM. Each of the defendants was sentenced to 97 months in prison, ordered to pay restitution of $118,000 and ordered to forfeit a 2007 Dodge Challenger, a 2007 Cadillac Escalade and a 2004 BMW, which they either purchased with cash or otherwise obtained after the robbery.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI and the Prince George’s County Police Department for their work in this investigation.  Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States Attorneys William D. Moomau and Christen A. Sproule, who prosecuted the case.
