PGPD Investigates Police-Involved Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting in Calverton.  The Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is leading the investigation.

On October 2, 2013, at about 2:00 am, patrol officers were called to the 3900 block of Lighthouse Way for an unknown trouble.  The preliminary investigation reveals the 911 caller had reported hearing a woman screaming “Get off me!”  A witness also reported hearing what he thought was the woman being struck.  Patrol officers arrived within one minute of receiving the call.  Once on scene, one of the patrol officers jumped two fences and a drainage ditch to reach the victim.  As the patrol officer approached her location, the suspect began to run away.  The patrol officer chased the man for approximately one-quarter mile in the dark near a wood line.  When the patrol officer caught up to him, the suspect was approaching a fence.  The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect refused to obey multiple commands from the patrol officer.  Fearing for his life, the patrol officer discharged his weapon.  The suspect was struck and killed.  No weapons have been recovered from the scene.  Paramedics tended to the female victim on the scene.  The patrol officer was not hurt.

Detectives are currently working to identify the decedent’s family members. Once they’ve been notified, the PGPD will release the decedent’s identity.

The patrol officer is a seven-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department.  He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
