PGPD Investigates Fatal Collision in University Park

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision in University Park early Monday morning. The decedent is 30-year-old Jennifer Sorto of Del Mar Drive in Woodbridge, Virginia.

On December 9, 2019 at approximately 12:30 am, officers were in the area of Aldelphi Road and Van Buren Street in University Park when they observed a driver in a red SUV who appeared to be not wearing a seatbelt. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens and attempted a traffic stop.  The SUV came to a brief stop.  The officers stepped out of their vehicle and were walking towards the SUV when Sorto placed the SUV in drive and fled the area.  When the officers returned to their vehicles, the SUV was gone from sight.  There was no pursuit. The officers got in their vehicle and began to canvass the immediate area in search for the SUV.  Minutes later they discovered the SUV overturned in a resident’s front yard in the 7100 block of College Heights Drive.  A male passenger was standing outside of the car and Sorto was located inside the vehicle.  Officers called for emergency medical assistance. Sorto was pronounced dead on the scene.

Preliminarily, investigators believe the SUV struck an unoccupied parked car, skidded sideways, and flipped before striking a house.  In the early part of the investigation, it is believed that excessive speed, road and weather conditions were factors in the collision.  Investigators will also work to determine if alcohol or any other intoxicants played a role.  The investigation is ongoing.

PGPD Investiga Mortal Choque en University Park

La Unidad de Análisis y Reconstrucción de Choques investiga un mortal choque ocurrido temprano en la mañana del lunes, en el área de University Park. La fenecida fue identificada como Jennifer Sorto, de 30 años de edad y vecina del área de Woodbridge, Virginia.

El 9 de diciembre, a eso de las 12:30 am, oficiales del Condado se encontraban en el área de Adelphi Road y Van Buren Street en University Park cuando observaron a una conductora en una SUV color rojo, quien parecía no llevar cinturón. Los oficiales encendieron las luces y sirena y procedieron a llevar a cabo una parada de tránsito. La SUV se detuvo brevemente. Los oficiales se bajaron de sus vehículos y caminaban hacia la SUV cuando Sorto aceleró y huyó del área. Una vez los oficiales regresaron a su vehículo, la SUV ya no estaba a la vista.
