UPDATE: Investigates Police-Involved Shooting in Temple Hills

On April 12, 2012, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers responded to 3107 Good Hope Avenue for a burglary in progress. Once on scene, officers were immediately confronted by a man fleeing the scene. He ran from the officers, hid behind a parked car and then reappeared, acting in a bizarre manner. He threw himself on the ground and when approached by the officers, he acted as if he was pulling a gun from his waistband.

Based on his actions, the officers believed he had a gun. One of the two officers discharged her service weapon. None of the rounds struck the suspect. As he was taken into custody, he stated that he wished the police would have killed him because he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Further investigation revealed that inside the apartment, the suspect stabbed a male resident numerous times. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The exact nature of the relationship is unclear but the men know each other.

The suspect is identified as Joseph Barrington Halsey, 23, of the 2000 block of Addison Road South, District Heights, Maryland. A warrant, in connection with the stabbing, has been obtained charging him with attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault and reckless endangerment.

The involved officer is identified as Police Officer First Class Tyisha Gage, a five year veteran, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District IV.  She has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
