On March 5, 2014, at about 8:45 pm, patrol officers were called to the 8600 block of Contee Road for the report of a car crash involving two cars. Both of the drivers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Barnes later died of his injuries. The second driver is expected to survive. There were no passengers in either car.
The preliminary investigation reveals Barnes was driving westbound on Contee Road. For reasons which remain unclear, Barnes crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the second car head on.
Preliminarily, speed appears to be a factor.
