PGPD Investigating Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Involving Stolen Vehicle

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred in Landover on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased driver is 35-year-old Shaunte Denise Canty of Washington, D.C.

On August 26, 2025, at approximately 3:50 pm, Seat Pleasant patrol officers observed a vehicle that had previously been reported stolen on August 22, 2025, traveling in the area of Seat Pleasant Drive and Joplin Street. Officers continued to follow the car from a safe distance, without engaging in a pursuit.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the stolen vehicle accelerated northbound on Sheriff Road towards the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, running the red light, and ultimately struck the side of Canty's vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. Canty died on the scene. A child passenger traveling with Canty sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Of the four juvenile males who were inside the stolen vehicle, three were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where they currently remain. One juvenile is in police custody.

Detectives are in consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine the charges against the juveniles. Detectives are also investigating the juveniles for unrelated crimes that may involve the stolen vehicle.
