The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team is investigating after an officer discharged his duty weapon one time to stop a dog that had just attacked a 12-year-old boy as well as a second dog and its owner. This occurred Tuesday evening. The child was transported to a hospital for treatment of several bite wounds. His injuries are not life-threatening.
On March 10th, at approximately 5:30 p.m.,
patrol officers responded to the 12400 block of Old Colony Drive North
in Upper Marlboro for an animal bite report. When
the officers arrived, the 12-year-old victim was on scene receiving medical
attention by emergency medical personnel. The preliminary investigation
revealed the dog had attacked the child as the child walked in the
neighborhood. After the attack, the dog’s owner put the dog on leash, but the
animal was able to break free again. The dog then charged at a woman who was
walking her dog. The involved dog knocked the woman to the ground and bit her
dog. Thankfully, neither was badly hurt. PGPD officers quickly took steps to
get the involved dog under control. Officers deployed a Taser which was
ineffective and deployed OC spray. One officer then discharged his duty weapon
one time, striking the animal. Animal Control personnel who arrived on scene
transported the dog to a veterinarian for treatment where it was later
euthanized.
As is our standard operating procedure, the
officer who discharged his duty weapon was placed on administrative leave
pending standard, post-shooting requirements. Our Special Investigative
Response Team will handle the investigation into the discharge of the officer’s

Oficial de Patrulla Descarga su Arma Contra Perro que
Atacó a un Niño y a un Segundo Perro
El Equipo de Respuesta Investigativa
Especial del Departamento de la Policía del Condado de Prince George’s
investiga luego de que un oficial de patrulla descargara su arma para detener a
un perro que acababa de atacar a un niño de 12 años, al igual que a otro perro
y a su propio dueño. El incidente ocurrió el martes en la tarde. El niño fue
trasladado a un hospital para recibir atención médica debido a las múltiples
mordidas que sostuvo. Sus heridas no eran grave.
El 10 de marzo, a eso de las 5:30 de
la tarde, oficiales de patrulla acudieron a la cuadra 12400 de Old Colony Drive
North en el área de Upper Marlboro tras recibir información sobre una mordida
de animal. Al llegar, la víctima de 12 años recibía atención médica por parte
de personal de emergencias en la escena. La investigación preliminar demostró
que el perro había atacado al menor mientras este jugaba en el vecindario.
Luego del ataque, el dueño le puso una cadena, pero el perro volvió a soltarse.
El perro entonces atacó a una mujer quien paseaba a su perro. El perro del
incidente tumbó a la mujer al piso y
mordió al perro de esta. Afortunadamente, ninguno de estos resultó
herido. Los oficiales de PGPD de inmediato tomaron medidas para poner el perro
bajo control. Estos utilizaron un taser, cosa que no tuvo efecto, y luego
recurrieron a gas pimienta. Finalmente, un oficial descargó su arma e impactó
al animal una vez. Personal de Control de Animales que arribó en escena
trasladaron el perro a un veterinario en donde posteriormente le pusieron a
dormir.
Según dictan nuestros protocolos
operativos, el oficial involucrado fue puesto en suspensión administrativa mientras
corre el periodo requisitorio. Nuestro Equipo de Respuesta Investigativa
Especial estará manejando la investigación sobre la descarga del arma del
