Prince George’s County Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement (W.A.V.E.) Unit executed five arrest warrants and two search warrants today in connection with the investigation of over 20 stolen vehicles in Prince George’s County.
Investigators identified the suspects after each brought stolen cars, taken from numerous locations throughout the County, to various scrap yards in the metropolitan area to be crushed and sold. Each of the suspects is responsible for stealing the vehicles, passing them off as abandoned, and then selling them for scrap for as much as $400 per car. The suspects primarily targeted older vehicles, since scrap yards are not required to check for salvage titles on vehicles that are more than eight years old.
Arrested today were Paul Butler, 45, of the 9200 block of Lottsford Road, Upper Marlboro, charged with 11 counts of Auto Theft; Michael Lindsey, of the 550 block of Karen Elaine Drive, New Carrolton, charged with 9 counts of Auto Theft; Dante Tapp, 29, of the 1800 block of 16th Avenue, Cheverly, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft; James Barber, 33, of the 400 block of Southerland Court, Upper Marlboro, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft; and Lori Cook, 31, of the 7800 block of Delano Road, Upper Marlboro, charged with 1 count of Auto Theft.
A sixth suspect, 44 year-old Darall Green (pictured), is also wanted on 11 counts of Auto Theft for allegedly stealing numerous vehicles, that were left abandoned on the Capital Beltway, to be sold for scrap.
"This is theft for profit that really affects the working class,” said Sergeant Fred Walford. “Most of these cars are older, and when they get stolen, the insurance doesn’t cover much. It leaves working mothers and fathers with no car, and no money to buy a new one. This hurts everybody.”
