PGPD Investigates Police-Involved Shooting in Landover

Prince George’s County, Maryland…The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred in Landover, Maryland last night.

On December 17, 2011, at approximately 9:52 p.m., a uniformed Prince George’s County Police Officer was traveling in the 7500 block of Greenleaf Road after working the “Toys for Tots” event at Police Headquarters when he observed a male subject lying in the grass on the side of the roadway. The officer subsequently stopped to check on the subject's welfare, and as the officer was exiting the unmarked police vehicle that he was driving, the subject brandished a handgun and pointed it at the officer. Fearing for his safety, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the subject. The subject, Rodney Deron Edwards, 35, of the 7700 block of Normandy Road in Landover, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased a short time later.

The involved officer, a two-year veteran assigned to the Bureau of Patrol, District IV, has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
