PGPD Patrol Officer Seriously Injured While on Traffic Stop

Updated May 22, 2014: The injured officer is identified as 26-year-old Police Officer Bashua Olaseha. He is currently listed in serious condition at Prince George’s Hospital Center.

A Prince George's County Police patrol officer is hospitalized with serious injuries after he was hit by a minivan on a traffic stop in Forestville. The patrol officer is assigned to the District III station in Palmer Park.

The preliminary investigation reveals three patrol officers were on the scene of a traffic stop shortly before 9:00 am on Pennsylvania Avenue near Walters Lane.  As that traffic stop was wrapping up, the patrol officers spotted a black minivan heading in their direction. All three officers tried to jump out of the way, but unfortunately, the minivan struck one officer.  The officer was trapped under the minivan for several minutes before first responders were able to free him.   Several police officers assisted the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department in lifting the minivan off the officer.  The injured officer was then flown to Prince George's Hospital Center with serious injuries.

The injured officer has served the Prince George's County Police Department for one-and-a-half years.  The officer will not be identified until all family members are notified.

The PGPD's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating what caused the driver to strike our officer.  Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is urged to call 301-731-4422.

This just goes to show that officers risk their lives everyday. They are too often under appreciated. I hope people now realize that there are only a few people in the world willing to get injured or lose their lives for someone else. Whoever the officer is...my hat's off to you. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
