PGPD Investigates Fatal Collision in Fort Washington

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred Monday evening in Fort Washington. The victim is 27-year-old Katelin Rodriguez of Fort Washington.  

On November 28, 2022, at approximately 8:35 pm, officers responded to the area of Indian Head Highway and Livingston Road. The preliminary investigation revealed Rodriguez was driving northbound on Indian Head Highway when she stopped and exited her vehicle in order to remove an item that was laying in the roadway. A second driver heading northbound struck Rodriguez shortly after she had exited her vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the striking vehicle remained on the scene.

PGPD Investiga Mortal Choque Ocurrido en Fort Washington

Student in Custody for Being in Possession of Gun at School

The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested a student this morning at Frederick Douglass High School for being in possession of a handgun on school property. The school is located in the 8000 block of Croom Road in the unincorporated section of Upper Marlboro.

At approximately 8:40 am, a student alerted both the School Resource Officer and Prince George’s County Public Schools security personnel that the 16-year-old suspect was showing off the gun while on a school bus heading to school. The SRO and security personnel located the student who had the handgun in his backpack. The gun was unloaded but there was ammunition in the bag. The student was arrested and transported to the Department of Corrections.

 

The student is charged as an adult with handgun on person, dangerous weapon on school property and possession of a firearm by a minor.

 

The investigation is on-going.

Bajo Custodia Estudiante por Posesión de Arma Dentro de Escuela

El Departamento de la Policía del Condado de Prince George’s arrestó a un estudiante en la mañana de hoy por estar en posesión de un arma de fuego dentro de los predios escolares. La escuela está ubicada en la cuadra 8000 de Croom Road, en un sector no-incorporado de Upper Marlboro.

A eso de las 8:40 am, un estudiante alertó al Oficial Escolar y al personal de seguridad de Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Prince George’s que el sospechoso de 16 años estaba enseñando la pistola en la guagua escolar mientras se dirigían a la escuela. El Oficial Escolar y el personal de seguridad localizaron al estudiante quien llevaba el arma en su mochila. El arma no estaba cargada pero había municiones en la mochila. El estudiante fue arrestado y trasladado al Departamento de Corrección.

El estudiante está siendo acusado en calidad de adulto por posesión de un arma de fuego, posesión de un arma peligrosa en predios escolares y posesión de un arma por parte de un menor.

La investigación del incidente sigue en curso.

PGPD Searches for Driver & SUV Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is asking for the community’s assistance as we continue to search for the driver and vehicle that left the scene of a fatal hit-and-run on November 14^th. The victim is 54-year-old Marcia Turner of District Heights.

 

On November 14, 2022, at approximately 7:00 pm, officers responded to the intersection of Walker Mill Road and Rochelle Avenue in the unincorporated section of District Heights.

Not actual vehicle

The preliminary investigation revealed an unidentified driver struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian died at a hospital a short time later. The driver of the striking vehicle did not remain on the scene. Preliminarily, investigators believe the vehicle to be a dark colored or black SUV like the vehicle pictured above. The vehicle is suspected of having front end damage to the headlight assembly.

PGPD Searches for Driver & Vehicle Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run in Greenbelt

The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is asking for the community’s assistance as we continue to investigate a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run in Greenbelt earlier this month. The name of the deceased pedestrian, an adult male, will be released once his family is notified. We are looking for the driver who fled the scene and the involved car.

On November 12, 2022, at approximately 11:15 am, officers with the Greenbelt Police Department responded to the area of northbound Kenilworth Avenue and Greenbelt Road.

Not actual vehicle

The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was struck by a vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. The striking driver did not remain on the scene. Preliminarily, investigators believe the vehicle is a 2018-2021 BMW X3. The vehicle is suspected to have damage on its passenger side, missing portions of its passenger side front wheel well trim as well as damage to the passenger side headlight lens.

PGPD Investigates Homicide in Takoma Park

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is working to identify and arrest the suspect(s) who killed a teenage girl in Takoma Park. The victim is 17-year-old Rosa Diaz-Santos of Greenbelt.

On November 15, 2022, at approximately 12:30 pm, skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area near the 1600 block Drexel Street. Detectives with the Prince George’s County Police Department were notified and opened a death investigation. An autopsy ruled the manner of death a homicide. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the victim this weekend.

Detectives are working to determine a motive and identify the suspect(s) in this case.

Suspect in Custody for Fatal Stabbing in Oxon Hill

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal stabbing in Oxon Hill. The suspect is 29-year-old Darryl Andre Jessie Scottland of Clinton. He’s charged with the murder of 47-year-old Anthony Taylor Sr. of Suitland. 

 

On November 2, 2022, at approximately 12:05 pm, Officers responded to the 4900 block of Indian Head Highway for a report of a stabbing. Once on scene, officers located the victim in the parking lot suffering from an apparent stab wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene. 

 

The preliminary investigation revealed Scottland and Taylor were unknown to each other. The suspect stabbed the victim during a dispute. 

 

Scottland is being charged with first- and second-degree murder and additional charges. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

PGPD mourns the loss of Sheriff High

 

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our former Chief of Police and current Prince George’s County Sheriff, Melvin C. High.  Sheriff High was a giant of a man.   His calming presence, reassuring command style, and exceptional leadership added to his distinguished persona.   He began his career in community service in 1969 as a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia where he retired as Assistant Chief of Police.

He went on to serve as the Chief of Police for the city of Norfolk, Virginia. In 2003 he was appointed Chief of Police of Prince George’s County Police Department where he served until 2008.  In 2010 Melvin High was elected and sworn in as Prince George’s County Sheriff and was finishing his third term next month.  His list of his accomplishments, awards and accolades are many. Praise came from the President of the United States, elected officials, as well as community organizations.  However, what Sheriff High cherished most was his loving his family and serving the residents of Prince George’s County.

For each Prince George’s County Police graduation, one student officer is chosen to receive “the leadership award”.  On September 28, 2022, as Prince George’s County Police Chief, I directed that award be renamed, “The Melvin C High Leadership Award.  The Melvin C High Leadership award is given to the student officer who exemplifies the most exceptional leadership amongst his or her peers throughout the entire Police Academy”.  A student recruit will be honored in each academy class graduation with this distinguished award named in his honor. 

 

He cherished his loving wife Brenda, their daughter Tracy, and grandchild Christian. Melvin C. High made Prince George’s Proud!! His Deputies called him Sheriff; The Prince George’s County Police called him Chief.  Everybody that knew him called him SIR!!!  His fifty-three (53) years of dedicated service to our community and law enforcement is immeasurable.  His presence will surely be missed by all.   

May God Bless Melvin C. High and may our prayers comfort his family and friends.

Detectives to Canvass for Information in Fatal Shooting of Jayz Agnew

 

This afternoon, Homicide Unit detectives will canvass for information in the murder of 13-year-old Jayz Agnew of Temple Hills.

On November 8, 2022, at approximately 5:20 pm, officers responded to a home in the 2100 block of Jameson Street. They discovered the victim outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital where a doctor pronounced him clinically deceased on November 11, 2022. 
 
In addition to identifying and arresting the suspect(s), detectives are working to determine a motive for this shooting. The canvass will begin at 4:00 pm in the parking lot at 2200 Iverson Street.

If anyone has information relevant to this investigation, they are asked to please call detectives at 301-516-2512. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
