Officers Arrest ATV & Dirt Bike Riders Driving Recklessly Through Front Yards and around Stopped School Bus

A concerned citizen called 911 Tuesday afternoon after seeing two ATV and one dirt bike rider driving recklessly. Patrol officers assigned to our District V station in Clinton spotted the group in the area of Woodyard Road and Don Drive in Clinton. The riders passed a stopped school bus that had its red flashing lights and stop sign activated placing the students’ lives at risk. The riders also drove through several residents’ yards and through their private properties. The illegal driving behavior continued as the riders were witnessed doing wheelies and traveling into oncoming traffic.

The patrol officers requested the assistance of our Aviation Unit. The flight crew provided updates on the riders’ locations which allowed the patrol officers to find a spot to safely stop and arrest two of the riders. The third rider was able to flee the area. Thankfully, there are no reported injuries related to the suspects’ reckless behavior.

The riders are charged with disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order and several additional charges.  Riding ATVs and unlicensed dirt bikes on county roadways and highways is illegal. We continue to ask any resident who witnesses the illegal operation of ATVs or dirt bikes on roadways to please call 911.

PGPD Working to Stop Criminals Targeting Vehicles That Are Left Unattended While Warming Up

We know it is cold outside. And we know no one likes to step into a cold vehicle. We understand. But during these cold months, criminals are looking for the opportunity to strike when owners choose to warm up their vehicles and to leave them unattended.

So far in 2018, we have had 37 vehicles reported stolen while being warmed up. The weather has been especially cold so far this year. We are watching this issue develop in real-time and want to partner with our community to stop this type of theft from occurring, because there will be more cold days ahead. This is a 100% preventable crime. The message is “Warm up your car.  Stay in your car.  Keep your car.”

“The Prince George’s County Police Department has made arrests in several of these thefts, but we want to stop them from occurring to begin with. We are urging residents to please stay with their vehicles when they are warming up. Even if you just want to run inside for a short period of time, it’s not worth losing your car.” said Captain Ken Humble of the PGPD Special Investigation Division.

Wayne was the driver of one of the struck vehicles. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The driver of the second struck car suffered what appear to be minor injuries. The driver of the striking vehicle and the passenger were transported to the hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.
