Detectives
with the Financial Crimes Unit charged a man after he tried to sell fake gold
to an off-duty officer in Bowie. The suspect is 33-year-old Laurentiun Miclescu
of the 2100 block of Orleans Street in Baltimore.
On
Monday afternoon, the officer was walking to his car in a shopping center
parking lot in the 6800 block of Racetrack Road when he was approached by the
suspect. The suspect told the off-duty officer he lost his credit card and
offered to sell him gold in exchange for cash. The officer knew of an on-going
investigation into a fake gold scam in the county and detained the suspect. The
suspect was interviewed and cited for theft by deception.
Investigators
know of three other similar incidents in the county since December. Detectives
believe there could be additional victims. If you believe you may have been
victimized, please call the Financial Crimes Unit at 240-695-7435.
