PGPD Investigating Death of 8-Year-Old Boy in ATV Incident in Temple Hills

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy who was riding on an ATV when it flipped in a cul-de-sac in Temple Hills.  The victim is Kemel Bonilla-Reyes of Temple Hills.

The Metropolitan Police Department notified the Prince George’s County Police Department of the child’s death on September 3rd after the boy died at Children’s National Medical Center Washington DC.   The Prince George’s County Police department was not alerted at the time of the incident nor called to respond to the original incident.   

Upon notification from MPD, our preliminary investigation reveals that on September 1st, in the 5000 block of Janice Lane in Temple Hills, a 15-year-old male was driving the ATV with the victim and a second 8-year-old boy riding on it. It appears Bonilla-Reyes was sitting on the gas tank and holding onto the handlebars when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the ATV flipped. A family member then drove Bonilla-Reyes to a hospital in DC.  The boy’s injuries required that he be transferred to Children’s National Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.  An autopsy is pending.  Detectives recovered and impounded the ATV for further investigation.   

Detectives with our Criminal Investigation Division will lead the investigation into the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the incident while our Collision Accident Reconstruction Unit will provide investigative expertise and technical assistance.  

“This is a tragic situation. We are going to get to the bottom of what happened and how it happened.These off road vehicles are a danger to the community and, as I have stressed so often, off road vehicles being driven on county roadways are an extreme danger to those riding them, and it is illegal. As we conduct this investigation, we continue to urge all those who ride ATVs to please do so only in a safe and legal manner so we can prevent these types of heartbreaking outcomes in the future,” said Chief Hank Stawinski.

PGPD Investiga Muerte de Niño de 8 Años de Edad en Incidente con Vehículo Todo-Terreno en Temple Hills

El Departamento de la Policía del Condado Prince George investiga la muerte de un niño de 8 años quien iba montado en un vehículo todo-terreno (ATV, por sus siglas en inglés) que se volcó en un cul-de-sac en Temple Hills. La víctima fue identificada como Kemel Bonilla-Reyes de Temple Hills.

El Departamento de la Policía Metropolitana notificó a la Policía del Condado sobre de la muerte del niño el pasado 3 de septiembre luego de que éste falleciera en Children’s National Medical Center en Washington DC. La Policía del Condado no fue notificada al momento del incidente ni llamada a responder a la escena cuando ocurrió el mismo.

Ante la notificación de la Policía Metropolitana, nuestra investigación reveló que el 1ro de septiembre en la cuadra 5000 de Janis Lane de Temple Hills, un joven de 15 años manejaba el vehículo ATV con la víctima y un segundo niño de 8 años de edad montados en él. Al parecer, Bonilla-Reyes estaba sentado encima del tanque de gasolina y agarrado de los rieles de mano cuando, por razones que aun permanecen bajo investigación, el vehículo ATV se volcó. Un familiar luego llevó a Bonilla-Reyes a un hospital en DC. Las heridas del menor requirieron que le trasladaran a Children’s National Medical Center en donde más adelante le declararon muerto. La autopsia aun está pendiente. Nuestros detectives recuperaron e incautaron el vehículo ATV para continuar investigando.

Detectives de nuestra División de Investigaciones Criminales llevarán la investigación sobre las circunstancias y pormenores que llevaron al incidente mientras que la Unidad de Análisis y Reconstrucción de Colisiones proveerá peritaje y asistencia técnica.

“Es una situación trágica. Llegaremos al fondo de lo que sucedió y cómo sucedió. Estos vehículos todo-terreno son un peligro para la comunidad y, tal como he enfatizado, conducir vehículos de este tipo en las carreteras del Condado representan un peligro extremo para quienes les conducen y además es ilegal. Según continuamos esta investigación, continuamos pidiéndole a todos los que conducen vehículos ATV que por favor solo lo hagan de manera seguro y legal para que podamos prevenir este tipo de tragedia en un futuro.” dijo el Jefe de la Policía Hank Stawinski.
