Air 1 Guides Ground Officers to Three Robbery Suspects

The Prince George's County Police Department’s Aviation Unit helped guide ground officers to three suspects who had just robbed a convenience store at gunpoint in Capitol Heights. Using Air 1's FLIR thermal imaging system, the flight crew was also able to capture the entire incident on video.

On July 10, 2014, at about 1:20 am, patrol officers were called to the store in the 7400 block of Central Avenue for an armed robbery. The preliminary investigation reveals three suspects walked in, one of them pulled out a gun and demanded cash. They then ran from the store, got into a car and sped away. As patrol officers responded to the scene, one officer spotted and tried to stop the suspects’ car. Instead of stopping, the suspects fled into the District. They finally stopped near RFK and jumped out of the car. The Air 1 crew located the suspects hiding in some woods next to the Anacostia River. As the helicopter circled above, the flight crew was able to guide PGPD and Metropolitan Police Department officers on the ground to the suspects.
